A True Gateway Drug

When you see the title of this post, you probably are thinking about the socially, and media accepted "gateway drug" marijuana. This is not about Marijuana, but a commonly prescribed, commonly taken class of
medication that is the gateway to stimulate the need for a plethora of medications.

I do not feel as if I am a conspiracy theorist, but I am someone who is forced to think outside the box to find the true answers. As a health care provider, I feel it is important to follow our Hippocratic Oath, "At Least, Do No Harm." Through clinical practice, I  have discovered one drug that I find is doing more harm than good.

And maybe that is the intentions of the pharmaceutical industry...

antacids, health, newstart, new start, chiropractic in columbusAnyone who studies biochemistry for an hour realizes that our digestive system is the most important function in the body. I know that everyone in the pharmaceutical industry that is responsible for designing and manufacturing medications have had a course in basic biochemistry. After a brief review of this science, you  will find that there an abundant amount of necessary nutrients that our bodies utilize to keep the body in a healthy, homeostatic state. The digestive system is responsible for digesting and assimilating all of these vital nutrients, and restoring our bodies health. Any holistic healthcare provider will discuss that the body is capable of healing itself, but without a proper function digestive tract, you cannot.

If digestion is the most necessary function, why do we keep taking a medication to shut it off?

Again, it is common knowledge for anyone that reads some information on biochemistry, and all, I repeat, all doctors that prescribe medicine should refresh their memories on the subject. I say this because if you have had your doctor prescribe this drug to you, or suggest you even try this class of medication, they DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BODY, or YOUR HEALTH.

So what is the gateway drug I am talking about?

antacid, health, newstart, chiropractor in columbus
It is Antacids, or heartburn medication.

These proton pump inhibitors are designed to stop the production of HCl in the stomach.

Why are they prescribed?

Due to major marketing advertisements leading you to believe that heartburn or Acid Reflux, or GERD are caused by too much stomach acid in the stomach, THIS IS FALSE.

The truth is, all of the common stomach acid conditions that we have become familiar with are not caused by too much acid in the stomach, but too LITTLE stomach acid. When you do not have enough stomach acid and the pH of your stomach elevates above the optimal 1-2 to a basic level, you lose the ability to break down proteins and carbohydrates to a readily digestible form. As the food that you eat enters a stomach without the proper digestive properties, they will just sit in the stomach undigested and will start to break down and ferment. As we all know, when you eat food, there are two outcomes that the bulk of our meal has to exit the body. Digested food go down the intestinal tract to be assimilated and excreted as feces. Undigested food go the opposite direction, that means, it comes back up and is regurgitated. (This is Acid Reflux) And after time and time again of using antacid medication, the body will become depleted of nutrients and it will start to send undigested nutrients into the small intestine, this is what leads to food allergies. You can learn more about that in an upcoming blog.

Just to recap, I will explain the basics of biochemistry that all of your health care providers and pharmaceutical personnel know but are not acknowledging.

We need a very acidic stomach, pH of 1-2, to properly digest carbohydrates and proteins so they can be assimilated and utilized by the body. Stomach acid is produced by proton pumps in the form of HCl, or hydrochloric acid. Without proper levels of HCl, we have symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux due to inadequate breakdown of nutrients and the body is trying to get the undigested foods out of the body.

Now, the greatest question that cannot come up with an good answer is this...

If all practicing doctors and pharmaceutical technicians have studied biochemistry, and understand that heartburn and acid reflux are due to too LITTLE acid in the stomach, WHY ARE THEY PRESCRIBING AN ACID LOWERING MEDICATION TO TREAT THIS?????

This is the where the critical thinking mind of mine struggles to believe that an ulterior motive is not in place.

Would it be alarming to you to find out that I have never seen a patient with a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, Depression, or Restless Leg Syndrome that did not have a history of antacid use?

This is true, every single patient that I treat for Fibromyalgia, Depression and RLS have had a long history of stomach issues where antacids were prescribed. I think we are far beyond coincidental, and it unfortunately even makes sense. Antacids are a gateway drug, or a way for pharmaceutical companies to upsell more products.

This blog is the first of a series to further explain my rationale on "The Gateway Drug" so get ready to learn how antacid medications are increasing the demand for medication for the following conditions:
  • B12 deficiency
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • Food Allergy
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Many More....
