The Gateway Drug, A Cause of Disease...

disease [dɪˈziːz]
n
1. (Medicine / Pathology) any impairment of normal physiological function affecting all or part of an organism, esp a specific pathological change caused by infection, stress, etc., producing characteristic symptoms; illness or sickness in general

A medical definition of disease states the following. Any impairment of normal physiological function affecting all or part of an organism producing characteristic symptoms, illness or sickness in general.
I continue to discuss what I have discovered to be a gateway drug into many other medical conditions or diseases as the definition states.

Yes, I am saying that the gateway drug, antacids or proton pump inhibitors, are causing disease.
Think about it this way. What does the drug do again. It inhibits the function of the stomach. It impairs the stomach to make a vital substance for digestion, Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). Let’s go right back to the definition of disease; any impairment of normal physiological function.

SO to be clear, people take this gateway drug to supposedly treat the stomach that is already in dysfunction, buy impairing it to be impaired. Have you ever tried to heal an open wound by cutting it with a knife? Have you ever tried to unboil an egg by boiling it? It absolutely makes zero sense to try to treat a dysfunctional organ by inhibiting its function.

So, the big question is… Why are about 30% of our fellow Americans taking this toxic gateway drug to treat heartburn?

Any market, any business, any salesman is interested in one thing. The UPSELL.. Give someone a cheap trial version of your product so they will buy more. That is precisely what is happening to the health of Americans. We are taking medications that shut functions of our body down to treat an already dysfunctional body. The only outcome of this is to further increase the prevalence of diseases.

Welcome to our climbing healthcare costs, and plummeting health.

Now let’s go to the second half of the definition of disease, this impairment of physiological function produces symptoms, illness, or sickness.

So, now you should be wondering, what symptoms or illness does taking the gateway drug cause in the body.

Let’s start with Fibromyalgia.

If you break the word Fibromyalgia down, it simply means pain in soft tissue. Fibromyalgia is a condition that is diagnosed by applying pressure to 18 pressure points in the belly of major muscle groups and the condition is diagnosed if you have pain in at least 11 of them.

There are an endless amount primary care physicians and neurologists that want you to believe that Fibromyalgia is a neurological condition that requires the use of Lyrica (upsell medication). Lyrica is designed to impair your nerve endings from firing so you no longer feel the pain from the condition.
THIS IS WRONG…

Have you ever worked out and had that dull muscle pain and soreness? That is pain in soft tissue, right? Well it’s true, the pain that is causing the post workout muscle soreness is a buildup of the byproduct of using a muscle, lactic acid. Lactic acid is then converted back into pyruvate to be used again and your muscle soreness goes away. I am not going to go into a deep discussion of biochemistry and how pyruvate is the building block in the Krebb’s cycle for energy production, but just understand that without this cycle, we have no energy for life.

Do you remember be saying that I have never seen a patient with Fibromyalgia that also didn’t have a history of antacid use? Well here is why.

The metabolic pathway that converts the built up lactic acid back to pyruvate requires a very specific set of B-vitamins. B-Vitamins are an extensive complex of nutrients that are water soluble. This means that they cannot be stored in the fat cells of the body, and we must intake an abundance of these vitamins each day to maintain a healthy level. The specific B-vitamins that are required for the lactic acid and pyruvate cycle are found primarily in green leafy vegetables and require something pretty specific to be properly digested and assimilated.

Guess what specific compound is needed to digest these B-vitamins.

HCl. That is right, HCl. Without an acidic stomach we have no ability to digest the vitamins that remove the lactic acid from our muscles and we cannot stop the feeling of soreness within them.

As I have already extensively discussed, the gateway drug that these articles are all about are designed to impair one specific process, the production of HCl. With inadequate HCl levels, you inhibit the ability to adequately digest B-Vitamins. With a deficiency in B-vitamins you cannot convert lactic acid back into pyruvate. Increased levels of lactic acid in the muscle leads to soreness. Chronic soreness of muscles is now called Fibromyalgia.

As you can probably deduce, treatment of this condition should never include the use of a neurological inhibitor like Lyrica, as you are treating the symptom of pain instead of the cause of the pain. Join the New-Start Solution, and learn how we accurately and effectively treat the condition of Fibromyalgia without any crazy, function inhibiting medications. Instead we use wholefood supplementation to restore function and cure disease.

A True Gateway Drug

When you see the title of this post, you probably are thinking about the socially, and media accepted "gateway drug" marijuana. This is not about Marijuana, but a commonly prescribed, commonly taken class of
medication that is the gateway to stimulate the need for a plethora of medications.

I do not feel as if I am a conspiracy theorist, but I am someone who is forced to think outside the box to find the true answers. As a health care provider, I feel it is important to follow our Hippocratic Oath, "At Least, Do No Harm." Through clinical practice, I  have discovered one drug that I find is doing more harm than good.

And maybe that is the intentions of the pharmaceutical industry...

antacids, health, newstart, new start, chiropractic in columbusAnyone who studies biochemistry for an hour realizes that our digestive system is the most important function in the body. I know that everyone in the pharmaceutical industry that is responsible for designing and manufacturing medications have had a course in basic biochemistry. After a brief review of this science, you  will find that there an abundant amount of necessary nutrients that our bodies utilize to keep the body in a healthy, homeostatic state. The digestive system is responsible for digesting and assimilating all of these vital nutrients, and restoring our bodies health. Any holistic healthcare provider will discuss that the body is capable of healing itself, but without a proper function digestive tract, you cannot.

If digestion is the most necessary function, why do we keep taking a medication to shut it off?

Again, it is common knowledge for anyone that reads some information on biochemistry, and all, I repeat, all doctors that prescribe medicine should refresh their memories on the subject. I say this because if you have had your doctor prescribe this drug to you, or suggest you even try this class of medication, they DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BODY, or YOUR HEALTH.

So what is the gateway drug I am talking about?

antacid, health, newstart, chiropractor in columbus
It is Antacids, or heartburn medication.

These proton pump inhibitors are designed to stop the production of HCl in the stomach.

Why are they prescribed?

Due to major marketing advertisements leading you to believe that heartburn or Acid Reflux, or GERD are caused by too much stomach acid in the stomach, THIS IS FALSE.

The truth is, all of the common stomach acid conditions that we have become familiar with are not caused by too much acid in the stomach, but too LITTLE stomach acid. When you do not have enough stomach acid and the pH of your stomach elevates above the optimal 1-2 to a basic level, you lose the ability to break down proteins and carbohydrates to a readily digestible form. As the food that you eat enters a stomach without the proper digestive properties, they will just sit in the stomach undigested and will start to break down and ferment. As we all know, when you eat food, there are two outcomes that the bulk of our meal has to exit the body. Digested food go down the intestinal tract to be assimilated and excreted as feces. Undigested food go the opposite direction, that means, it comes back up and is regurgitated. (This is Acid Reflux) And after time and time again of using antacid medication, the body will become depleted of nutrients and it will start to send undigested nutrients into the small intestine, this is what leads to food allergies. You can learn more about that in an upcoming blog.

Just to recap, I will explain the basics of biochemistry that all of your health care providers and pharmaceutical personnel know but are not acknowledging.

We need a very acidic stomach, pH of 1-2, to properly digest carbohydrates and proteins so they can be assimilated and utilized by the body. Stomach acid is produced by proton pumps in the form of HCl, or hydrochloric acid. Without proper levels of HCl, we have symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux due to inadequate breakdown of nutrients and the body is trying to get the undigested foods out of the body.

Now, the greatest question that cannot come up with an good answer is this...

If all practicing doctors and pharmaceutical technicians have studied biochemistry, and understand that heartburn and acid reflux are due to too LITTLE acid in the stomach, WHY ARE THEY PRESCRIBING AN ACID LOWERING MEDICATION TO TREAT THIS?????

This is the where the critical thinking mind of mine struggles to believe that an ulterior motive is not in place.

Would it be alarming to you to find out that I have never seen a patient with a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, Depression, or Restless Leg Syndrome that did not have a history of antacid use?

This is true, every single patient that I treat for Fibromyalgia, Depression and RLS have had a long history of stomach issues where antacids were prescribed. I think we are far beyond coincidental, and it unfortunately even makes sense. Antacids are a gateway drug, or a way for pharmaceutical companies to upsell more products.

This blog is the first of a series to further explain my rationale on "The Gateway Drug" so get ready to learn how antacid medications are increasing the demand for medication for the following conditions:
  • B12 deficiency
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • Food Allergy
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Many More....

ADHD, ADD? Overdiagnosed, Overmedicated...

What is causing the rise in ADHD, ADD, and all other psychological imbalances in the youth?

It is not news that more and more of children and teens are being diagnosed with the condition called Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The prevalence is rising in a dramatic rate, but what else is rising at the same rate? The answer is Sugar intake.  Is there a correlation?

I have seen patients with this condition ADHD, and ironically, there is almost always a correlation to these children also having a food allergy, or multiple food allergies. But why, what is the connection between hyperactivity and food allergies?

First, it is important to understand that if you have been in contact with an ADHD child, and they had no food allergies, unfortunately, most food allergies go undiagnosed. The medical profession does not seek this connection. Typically, food allergies are diagnosed prior to the diagnosis of ADHD, but at soon as ADHD is found, no course of action is taken for analyzing the digestive tract. So, this leads me to the true root of the problem in any accurately diagnosed hyperactive child.

I say “accurately diagnosed” because there are some alarming incentives for diagnosing these conditions. For example, did you know that school systems get a $400 incentive a year for each student that is diagnosed? Most schools have developed an interactive online learning style. Does this take into account the three different styles of learners? Audio and Kinetic learners do not benefit from this teaching style, only visual. It is impossible to keep a child’s attention if you are not interacting to them in a manner that suits their personality type. But this is not a paper discussing the proper diagnosis of ADHD, this blog set to address the cause of true ADHD, ADD, etc.

I often blog about the importance of the digestive system and its role in health in the body. To say the digestive system has just a role in health is almost misleading, it is the most important function in the body. Proper digestion allows the body to uptake every vital nutrient that gives the body its life force. I get it, you are wondering what food allergies and ADHD have to do with the health of the digestive system, and also, how does sugar affect any of it?

Let’s start from the beginning.  Can you tell me what foods these labels belong to?

This is the ingredient list of the major producers of infant formula. Can you see a common MAIN ingredient? Corn Syrup, Sugar. In America, it has become evident that breast feeding is a thing of the past. And yes, I understand that I am a male, I do not have any understanding of the woes of this form of feeding. But, it is important to address that breast feeding is the primitive and natural form of feeding for an infant. The milk from a mother is the primary source of building the immune system of a baby. It is also chocked full of vital nutrients in a raw, bio-available form that are needed to properly develop the digestive tract of an infant. But not to soap box about nursing, I am just trying to put into perspective the importance of building a beneficial digestive system in infants.

So, as you can see, the primary source of calories in the infant formula is derived from sugar substances. What sugar does to the digestive system is unparalleled in a negative way. Sugar is linked to decreasing the acid levels in the stomach and decreases the stomach’s ability to properly denature and break down the food that is consumed. Have you noticed that the amount of cases of chronic spit ups, or acid reflux in infants?

When the food enters the stomach and the pH is in an alkaline state, the food doesn’t get properly digested, and the small intestine does not like foods that are undigested. There are only two ways for food to leave the stomach, down the tract into the small intestine, or up through the esophagus. So, to be redundant, when we eat foods that are loaded with sugar, they cannot be properly digested due to low acid levels, and then the food either enters the small intestine undigested, or it is spit back up like in acid reflux. Unfortunately, the common medical model treatment plan for acid reflux is prescription Zantac, or other antacid medications. These medications just further lower the acid levels in the stomach, furthering the digestive problems. Back to the point, we are going to discuss what happens when food enters the small intestine undigested.

Here is a brief explanation of food allergies

Some foods (milk, gluten, eggs, etc.) that require a very acidic stomach to digest also require specific digestive enzymes to further their proper denaturing and assimilation into the blood stream. If these two factors are not in place, or the digestive health of a person is not adequate those foods can be assimilated, or taken into the blood stream undigested. When an undigested food enters the blood stream, the body sees this as a foreign object, and the natural process is for the blood system to build antibodies against these particles, and this is the start of food allergies.

Ok, back to the point

Sugar is one of the primary causes of food allergies due to its ability to lower the stomach’s acid levels, but it also has one other problem. It changes the normal flora in the large intestine. Normal flora is the bacteria that must be in the large intestine to finish the digestion of foods, and also programs the body’s immune system. There are many forms of “bad” opportunistic bacteria that can combat the good bacteria and the main source of fuel or food for these “bad” bacteria is sugar. When these “bad” bacteria start to win the battle with the normal flora, and become more prevalent in the large intestine, they can program your cravings. Any organism is trained to crave the fuel that makes them stronger, and the “bad” bacteria are trained to create a craving for sugar. Again, to recap. Sugar is the cause of proliferation of “bad” bacteria in the large intestine, and the “bad” bacteria also create a craving for sugar.

In Short, We start each child off with an infant formula that the main ingredient is sugar, starting this cascade of events.

Back to ADHD, ADD, and other psychological imbalances

Have you ever seen a child on Mountain Dew or red bull?

Sugar is the cause of hyperactivity, sugar is the cause of lack of attention, and sugar is the cause of most digestive tract conditions. But soft drinks are not the only place to find high levels of sugar. Look at the main ingredient in most of the processed foods you are eating, ketchup, salad dressing, and even bread/pasta.

The plan.

Restoring the most important function of the human body is the primary plan. This starts with utilizing enzymes that will restore the acid levels in the stomach, boosting the normal flora levels in the large intestine, and minimizing sugar intake.

The New-Start Solution is a specific diet that is designed to do just that.

You can follow down two pathways, the medical model for ADHD with consists of nervous system inhibiting medications that have no future of treating the cause of the hyperactivity, or you can start with the restoration of the body’s ability to digest the natural substances that relaxes the nervous system, allowing the body to rest.

Dr Mozingo's Food For Thought. Lose fat, build muscle

The New-Start Solution | Muscle and Strength

Nutrition | Lose Fat, Build Muscle
This phase is designed to lean out the diet, and start the body in muscle building mode. The food we eat is fuel for the body and muscles, and when you are starting a new weight training regimen, it is important to properly fuel the body, or you will suffer from decreased gains, and muscle fatigue.  This is not an easy program to follow exactly, but try to stay as true to it as you can.

Should I count calories?
Yes, when someone is trying to alter their physique, or build muscle, it is important to count calories to ensure they are getting enough. Yes, I said to ensure they are getting enough calories. Under eating could result in muscle fatigue, and also turn on specific enzymes that promote fat storage instead of muscle building. On average, we need about 15-18 calories per pound of body weight each day to maintain muscle tone, and to build muscle, it needs to go up to 18-20.  This being said, it is more important to balance where your calories are coming from than just the total number of calories being taken in.

Is protein important?
Muscles are made of protein, so in order to build bigger, stronger muscles you have to fuel them with their building blocks, like proteins. Several studies have shown that consuming 30-40% of total calories from protein sources on train days show a dramatic increase in muscle gains. This translates into 1 ½ - 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. The New-Start Solution program starts on the lower end of that, requiring 1 ½ grams of protein per pound of body weight. Protein sources should vary as well, eggs for example have about 8-12 grams of protein each, and an 8 ounce sirloin steak has about 55 grams of protein. So to be clear, it is important to consume 1 ½ have grams of protein per pound of body weight on train days (225 grams for 150lb person) and 1 gram on rest days.

Are carbohydrates important?
Carbohydrates act as the body’s energy, allowing for muscle contraction and also vital for glycogen storage. Glycogen is what stays in the muscle and pulls water into them making them fuller and allowing a stretch of the muscle fibers. When the muscle fibers stretch, it stimulates protein synthesis, building bigger stronger muscles. In the beginning, most people have plenty of store glycogen, so in Phase 1 The New-Start Solution suggests an intake of 1 gram of carbohydrates per pound of body weight on train days, and ½ grams per day on rest days.

Are fats important?
Fats are critical in the building block of testosterone and all other androgen hormones. Testosterone is a vital part of muscle building so eating adequate amounts of fat will boost testosterone levels. Omega-3 fats are an essential part of joint lubrication and nerve conduction. These fats are found in fatty fish and eggs. The New-Start Solution puts an emphasis on the importance of supplementing with ORGANIC Omega-3 oil and also consuming about ½ of your body weight in grams of fat/day. These intakes should be 1/3 saturated, 1/3 monounssaturated and 1/3 polyunsaturated fats.  Most meat products have this balance.

Is there any other tips for better gains?
  1. Eat frequently, 3-4 meals a day, with snacks in between is adequate.
  2. Always eat protein for breakfast
  3. Eat eggs. 3 eggs a day has been proven to promote bigger gains.
  4. Eat casein protein before bed. This allow for muscle building during the long hours of sleep.
  5. Eat your veggies. The micronutrients found in vegetables will fuel the body on a cellular level.

Diet plan or Gym?… Health, it’s what you eat

It’s 2013, and we all have to make that big decision, do we want to be healthier than we were in 2012, or not?

New Year has come and passed, and most of us have made a resolution to get healthy, so we sign up at the local gym, go to GNC and get the latest and greatest fat loss miracle, and get started. It is not news that exercise is a vital part of becoming a healthier person, but we often look over the fact that it only accounts for about 20% of weight loss and health. The vast majority of our health is based on what is at the end of our fork. This is why most resolutions fail. This is why we never see the results we desire from the hard work at the gym. Each time you go to the gym you burn about 200-300 calories.

This is a good start, but if you eat one cheeseburger, drink one fountain drink, or eat one Snickers bar, you are going to negate every bit of that workout. I am guilty of this just as much as anyone is, if I go to the gym and get a good set in, I feel like I am allowed to reward myself with something. That reward is always a food that will negate the great benefits I just got at the gym, and it is back to square one the next day.

A wash on the day for health is better than the average American, because statistically the majority of Americans gain weight every single day, so if you are able to maintain a weight and not gain you are actually showing benefits. But this is not was we want, is it? We want to lose a ton of weight in a hurry. We want a six pack by spring.

The hardest part of my position is to try to put rational goals in place for each patient. Weight loss greater than 3 lbs per week is too much and will shock the body and cause health damage. So, it is important to be patient and set a goal of about 10 lbs per month. Eating a reduced calorie diet is effective, but it is important to take some focus away from just calorie in calorie out and remember that without adequate levels of vital nutrients, the body will not allow you to lose weight.

Here are some quick tips on how to maximize your weight loss results:
  1. Do not drink your calories
  2. Avoid all grains
  3. Make vegetables your primary food
  4. Eat only foods with ONE ingredient
  5. Avoid processed food
Remember…

If you live the common American lifestyle, and eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), chances are, your health will worsen this year, just as it did last year and the year before that. We are living in a way that has led to a decline in our health and an incline in our waist line. The New-Start Solution is a plan that will work very effectively to restore your health and help you reach your New Year’s goal.
