Release the Grip of Traditional Medicine

Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in Columbus
I want to start this by making it clear that I am not trying to demonize traditional medicine. Clearly, there is a place for medications, surgeries, and general medical medicine practice.

The principle idea for this blog is to help you understand that there are other options in regards to taking care of your health.

Millions upon millions of dollars are spent every single day by big Pharma to make sure that you are constantly bombarded with advertisements stating that they have the next best medication for whatever seems to ail you. It is amazing how happy every one of those actors are on the big screen, simply because they started taking this miracle drug to block or hide all of their symptoms.

As far as business marketing goes, I would say big Pharma are geniuses. They control the health care market, and they have created a health care system that seems to only have ONE method of treatment, pharmaceuticals. We have no connection to the adverse affects of medications and the traditional medical system.

As I scan through the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, some of the numbers are pretty alarming.

Did you know:
  • The average person ages 65 to 69 take almost 14 prescriptions
  • Those over 80 take nearly 18 prescriptions
  • 15-25% of medications used by seniors have been considered unnecessary or even inappropriate
  • Medical related problems or accidents cost the US $177.4 Billion, yes Billion, a year
  • Adverse drug reactions is among the top 5 greatest threats to the health of seniors
  • Each year, 32,000 seniors suffer hip fractures from medication-related problems
  • "Any symptom in an elderly patient should be considered a drug side effect until proven otherwise." -- J. Gurwitz et al. Brown University

There are many more interesting stats to be noted, but you can go to the site above and check it out for yourself.

As I mentioned earlier, the traditional medical system is necessary, but I encourage you to try and understand that it is not necessarily the best choice for your initial method of care. Chronic conditions are addressed with medications as the initial plan of care, and it should not be this way. Low back pain is quickly addressed with muscle relaxers and opiate pain medications, this should not be the case.

Diet and lifestyle based conditions like high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity are addressed with synthetic medications to cover up the symptoms, instead of the doctor taking the time to address the root cause of these condition to prevent them.

Try Alternative Medicine First

This blog is to encourage each of you to further explore into the alternative medicine avenue.

The true beauty of alternative/holistic care, is that is will actually follow the Hippocratic Oath, "If at least, I will do no harm".

Holistic medicine such as
  • Massage Therapy
  • Chiropractic Therapy
  • Nutritional Supplementation
  • Herbal Supplementation
  • Reiki
  • Yoga

Will not only work to restore your health, it will do it without causing any harm to your body.

Dr. Mercola, a renowned holistic healthcare practitioner  wrote an article called
Chiropractors and Exercise Are Better than Drugs Says New Study

I encourage you to read this to help understand the difference between allowing the traditional medical system be your initial treatment option, or holistic healthcare.

The truth is, whether you are a senior or not, you know someone that is. You will be some day, and your health today affects you then. If you can start to take control of your health without dependence on a medication regimen, your health will benefit in the long haul. Hopefully you can minimize the prescription levels, and hopefully, if we can start to see the trend in alternative medicine, we can reduce the 25% of unnecessary medications prescribed to the senior citizens.

Regardless of the symptom that you start to have. If you have been diagnoses with a chronic condition, find a holistic provider and just get a second opinion with their treatment options. If they can keep you off of a single medication, your health will benefit.

3 Years and Some Change

Upon graduating for Palmer College of Chiropractic, Florida in December 2011, I set out to create a health center that bases its principles around changing what you think and know about the medical system. With a strong grasp on Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care and an evolving knowledge on nutritional therapy, tying the two holistic medicine approaches together would be the premise of New-Start Health Center.

Dr mozingo, new-start, newstart, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus Indiana chiropractor, chiropractic in Columbus, pain management in Columbus, Columbus pain clinic, Columbus Indiana pain, clinic of chiropractic in Columbus, Columbus in, low back pain, mid back pain, neck pain, migraines, migraine clinic Columbus, wellness clinic in Columbus, Columbus wellness clinic, family chiropractic and wellness, family chiropractic, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, trent mozingoThe first year was definitely the most difficult. Opening a business that is designed to go against the grain is never easy. Fresh out of college, I definitely felt on my own. There are many chiropractic management companies that are designed to help young businesses get off the ground, but I wanted to pioneer something unique. The primary disconnect for myself and chiropractic management companies is the overall feeling of chiropractic in our society. We have all heard the horror stories of going to a chiropractor, “once you go you have to go forever” or “they spend 2 minutes with you and just crack your back”. Trying to change the mind of the majority on how New-Start is a different style of chiropractic. Evidence-Based Chiropractic does not X-ray every patient. We treat pain syndromes and we release them from care. I spend about 12-15 minutes with every patient, minimum. This is a dramatic change to the stereotypical chiropractic visit.

Functional medicine Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in ColumbusTreating low back pain, headaches, knee pain, etc, has is rewards, but the current epidemic in the US with obesity and diabetes is something I have become drawn to. As I stated, an evolving knowledge on nutritional therapy, I have spent countless hours in a biochemistry book, in seminars, and scouring the internet for research studies to figure out exactly what is going wrong. The common medical practices for diabetes and obesity have fallen short. We are getting sicker, fatter, and unhealthier at a faster rate than ever previously recorded. Unfortunately, healthcare costs are also at an all-time high and climbing quickly. In the anecdotal world, the treatment of conditions starts with covering up the symptoms, and with low back pain, or migraines, this is not detrimental. When you start to use this approach toward an inflammatory condition like Diabetes or Obesity, more problems arise.

After years of research it seems, 5 or 6 book starters, I am proud to be writing a book called, How Health Comes Apart. The idea behind this book is the primary focus of the nutritional therapy side of New-Start Health Center. I am writing my research to change America’s way of thinking about our obesity epidemic.

In three years, New-Start Health Center has been all about change. Change how chiropractic is viewed and utilized. Change how we diagnose and treat obesity and diabetes, and change how medical systems define success. The first three years in the Columbus area have been encouraging, insightful, and rewarding.  I am proud to be a part of the maturity of New-Start Health Center, and with many more years to come, to continue to change for the better.

Why Can’t I Seem to Lose Weight, and Keep IT OFF?!?!?!

Why Can’t I Seem to Lose Weight, and Keep IT OFF?!?!?!

Weight loss Columbus Indiana, weight loss Columbus, lose weight in Columbus, how to lose weight, nutritional advice in Columbus, Columbus Indiana nutrition, Columbus Indiana weight clinic, weight loss clinic in Columbus, wellness coach in Columbus, wellness, health clinic in Columbus, new-start, newstart, newstart health center, new-start Columbus, wellness in ColumbusThis is a pretty serious question, and as most of the American population can relate to the epidemic of obesity, I feel it is a question that is not only misunderstood, but misguided. Weight loss has become a very profitable industry, reaching $60.5 billion in sales in 2014. With 69% of America’s 20+ year old population being overweight (according to 2011-2012 CDC) and climbing, I would say the industry that has set out to make $BILLIONS$ has some explaining to do.

So, what do I mean by a question that is misunderstood and misguided?

We have an entire weight loss industry that has put themselves in place to answer this easy enough question, and it seems, they are simply failing to either figure out what people are asking, or failing to provide a relative solution to the problem at hand. People are getting more overweight while using these products. Or even worse, people lose a ton of weight on a special product, and as soon as they stop taking it, BOOM, an additional 15 pounds gets added.

No sustainable weight loss miracle has been created, and yet, the industry keeps their Dr. Oz recommended, green tea, miracle berry, super protein powder, crap on the shelf of every supermarket, gas station, bus stop, and car wash to ensure to the masses that they, in fact, have the secret weapon against the invading fat cells.

At the end of the day, everything that is in our face about weight management is a big misconception to ensure ongoing profits for the industry. I spend a lot of time researching the metabolic functions of the body. I have a clear understanding of the plethora of hormones that are involved in weight loss, and it almost astonishes me that these companies continue to market complete fallacies. To be honest, weight loss is a complex subject, with many different interpretations. Some try to blame it solely on genetics, and others try to blame it on bad luck. With the research I have found, these two excuses just do not work for me.

So, the big question remains… Why can’t I seem to lose weight and keep it off?

Well, I can assure you that lack of effort is not the issue. It seems that everyone that is a client to the weight loss industry has tried absolutely everything. I have seen patients taking a miracle pill that is supposed to shed the fat, and no effort is necessary on their part. The problem persists in the effort given. It seems that we will spend a fortune, put faith in every single cockamamie diet pill, and try so hard to believe that they will work just like it shows on TV or the advertisement. We are putting in so much effort to keep us from actually having to put in effort? Yes, I understand that sounds ridiculous.

Newsflash… If a product or weight loss solution tells you that you do not need to make any lifestyle changes, and their product is the end all beat all, no effort needed to lose weight, or if they tell you that you do not need to change your diet and the product will just curb your appetite. DO NOT BUY THIS GIMMICK. Yes, that product does sound too good to be true, because it is.

EEERRRT. Get back on track here…

I am always asked this question, and I always have the same answer. If you want to know how to lose weight, first you have to understand what causes weight gain.

  • 1.       Diet: The quality of the food you eat is the most important factor in regards to weight loss. 80% of the responsibility for weight gain and weight loss has to do with what you put in your mouth. If you are thinking you are eating the right foods because it says it is ZERO CALORIES or FAT FREE, you are probably eating the exact foods that cause weight gain. Processed foods that are loaded with sugars, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and any amount of crazy scientific ingredients are the foods that are causing your weight gain issues.

  • 2.       Stress: The hormone cascade involved with elevated emotional stress will only wreak havoc you your metabolic function.  Please understand, stress plays a vital role in how our nervous systems react. If you are in a stressful situation, it will stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, and your flight or fight response kicks in. During this time, the parasympathetic nervous system is shut down, digestion is shut down, and every other metabolic function is shut down to keep your energy focused on running or fighting a stimulus. Which takes me to my next bullet point.

  • 3.       Digestion: I understand that most want to blame their weight struggles on a faulty thyroid gland, but I can ensure you, your digestive function is vastly more important, and a sluggish digestive system is possible the root cause of your thyroid woes. If your body is unable to digest food properly, (given that you are actually eating food that is, well, food) you will not be able to break down these foods and assimilate the vital nutrients that the body needs to function. If your body is void of the vital nutrients, it is in stress (see previous bullet). Thyroid, adrenal, cardiovascular, and every other function of the body needs a constant influx of vital nutrients, if your diet, and your digestion system are not providing these building blocks, your weight will suffer.

  • 4.       Exercise: Understand that the time spent at the gym, or the calories burned while you are on a treadmill, plays a minimal part on your weight. Exercise is beneficial in the form of a system for increasing muscle mass in the body. The body’s resting metabolic rate (RMR), or the amount of calories you can burn at rest, is directly related to the amount of muscle mass you have. If you want to increase your RMR, you need to increase your muscle mass. This is what exercise if for. If you are not active, your muscle mass will diminish and your RMR will crash.

As I stated, if you truly want to know why you can’t seem to lose weight, first you have to understand what is causing you to gain weight in the first place. This is where I stand behind the comment that if a product tells you that all you have to do is take their miracle pill and change nothing, IT WILL FAIL. Sure you might lose some weight initially, make yourself a true believer, and then it all comes crashing back on. This is because you have failed to remove the one thing that is causing the problem at hand.

To be clear, if you eat processed foods, even just one a day, you gain weight. If you do not exercise at all, and your muscle mass is going down the tubes, you gain weight. If you are going through a stressful time, and you know that you are having a difficult time dealing with it, you will gain weight. If you digestive system is not working properly, you have heartburn, you have intermittent diarrhea or constipation, you gain weight.

I do understand that you know someone who went through a tough time and they couldn’t eat and they seemed to wilt away to nothing. Or, sometimes a digestive system is all mixed up, and people seem to be unable to gain weight. And I also have seen those pesky people that seem to be able to eat ANYTHING THEY WANT, and never gain a pound. Rest assured, this is a major point that we address at New-Start Health Center.

I will not go on and on about the unhealthy relationship between weight and health as we all have seemed to become accustomed to. But to be clear, if you know someone who is not overweight, but they seem to eat sugary product after sugary product, iff you know someone that is too stressed out to eat and they are wilting away, they are not healthy. Sure, they may appear to be at a healthy weight, but their metabolic function is in distress. Each person’s body fat storage function is different. But I have to encourage you not to envy someone who can eat whatever crap they want and not gain weight. Their health is struggling and due to the vanity of America, we still allow them to assume a healthy status. This is dangerous.

So, the first part of answering the primary question is this: You need to understand what causes weight gain if you ever want to stop it.

Fun Analogy Time!!!

Think of weight gain or being overweight as a pink room. You are not interested in the room being pink anymore. In fact, you want to change it to a white room (lose weight). To start this process, first you have to realize some very important factors. How the room became pink? What you have to do to get it to turn white, and finally, what you need to do to keep it from turning pink again? Now, it is easy to understand how that room became pink, right? Someone took the pink paint, put in on a roller, and painted to their hearts content. And you obviously know to turn the room white. You take white paint, put it on a roller, and paint to your hearts content. The biggest disconnect between being overweight and weight loss, and getting a pink room to turn white is the simple step of, what do you need to do to keep it from turning pink again?

The current model we have in place for weight loss is missing this important step. If you have not learned what has made your room turn pink, or made you gain weight, if you do not understand how to keep it from coming back after you lose weight, then you are in a winless battle. Every single diet plan that I have researched, and every single miracle pill that tells you that you do not have to change anything is like painting your wall with white paint and then your friend coming in right behind you and accidently dripping bright red paint into your bucket without you even noticing. You just keep trying and trying to get a pink wall to turn white, but the material you are using, will only leave it the same color. Depending on how many coats you try to apply, you could even end up with a darker shade of pink. (The analogy here is that you will actually end a diet weighing more than what you actually started)

OK, that was fun. Now, let’s clean up this answer, shall we?

So many people are struggling with weight gain, obesity, and overall poor health in America. So many people are searching high and low to figure how why them, why are they overweight, how did they get this unlucky? To be honest, it is on you. It is not all your genetics fault, your doctor’s fault, or even your personal trainer’s fault.

You have to understand that your lifestyle is the predominant cause of weight gain. The food you eat,
the stress you have around you, the amount of exercise you perform, is all on you.

Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in ColumbusIf you want to lose weight, you have to start by addressing the cause, AND GET HELP. You need help from your family, friends, loved ones, coworkers, etc. You need the people around you to understand your goals, and understand what it is going to take for you to get your weight on track. YOU HAVE TO STAY FOCUSED.

So many people go into The New-Start Solution with intentions of losing 50 pounds in 5 days and then they get to go back to eating pizza and Doritos. This is just not a reality. The New-Start Solution is a Lifestyle Change. A rebirth into a healthy style of living. Call it what you want but it is not a diet or miracle system. It is simply the most basic form of eating that makes your body more efficient.

With all of my research, it all comes back to this one simple rule:

If you want to lose weight, and I mean truly lose weight… Look at yourself in the mirror. When you start to think about what you want to change, do not even think about the vanity standpoint of getting into a smaller size of pants. Do not waste your time thinking about what you ideal weight is. Instead, think about what you want to change to get there.

The Scary World of Weight Loss

The world of weight loss is scary.

I want to introduce you to the one of the most RIDICULOUS things I have ever read. It was brought to my attention that I need to look at the ABC Diet. As a warning, This diet is based on a pro-anorexia template.

functional medicine new start. Dr. Moz, Dr. Mozingo

Feel free to look it up at abc-diet.com.

This is a dangerous, ultra-low calorie diet that is designed for dramatic weight loss. Ironically, you can see at the bottom of the page, The Risk Factors.

Granted, this is a gross example of what under eating calories can do to the body, but realistically, it is all the same. If you diet in a form of just under eating calories by skipping meals, or eating two carrots, and a mini Snickers per day, these risk factors are relevant.

I have written a lot on the topic of weight loss, and tried to teach as many people as I can about the epidemic of obesity in our country. Some listen, receive the information, and make some drastic life changes to ensure they are healthier and enjoy their life to its fullest. Some, on the other hand, hear me, understand what I am saying, but are just not driven enough to take the necessary changes that it takes to lose weight. The vast majority or the patients I see, unfortunately, already know what is causing their weight issues, but try to look beyond it and dive headfirst into some whimsical fat loss miracle pill that will cure all of their weight problems and never have to change a thing with their diet or lifestyle.

The real issue is that there are so many within the weight loss industry that are just out to make a quick buck and sell as much of the newest gimmick product as they can before they close the doors and erase any traceable evidence that they even existed.

I constantly research and study biochemistry, and I fluently understand the many metabolic pathways that are involved in fat reduction, or losing healthy weight. The majority of people think that weight loss is all about CALORIES. I am sure you have read that if you eat 3500 less calories than you burn, you will lose 1 pound. This is completely untrue. Losing weight is so driven toward the scale, that the entire weight loss industry has lost sight of what is really important. How much you weight on a scale has no regard to your total health spectrum. Body fat percentage, muscle percentage, total water percentage, and your BMI are important. If you diet plan is not driven to lose FAT tissue ONLY, then you are not on the right diet.

Resting Metabolic Rate, or RMR, Basal Metabolic Rate, BMR, and Total Energy Expenditure, TEE, are the real caloric factors that you should be looking at. If you want to lose weight, you need to make sure you don’t decrease your RMR by losing muscle tissue or you will simply shut down your thyroid gland, and all of your metabolic function. The only way to increase your systemic RMR metabolism is to increase muscle mass. Eating 6 small meals a day does not increase metabolism. Not eating 3 hours before bed does not increase your metabolism. Skipping breakfast does not hurt your metabolism. What hurts your metabolism is under eating calories, not providing enough fuel for your muscles, causing muscular depletion, and shutting down your thyroid gland.

You never want to lose weight at the expense of your muscles. You do not want to do a colon flushing diuretic based diet that will just dehydrate you. You want to eat in a pattern that supplies your muscles with protein, nervous tissue with fats, and every cell in your body with carbohydrates.

This is where I could go on a thirty page discussion about how to fit your proteins, fats, carbs, to supply your body with the adequate amount of calories to fit your Total Energy Expenditure, but not exceeding it because you need to eat more than your RMR, but not more than your TEE if you want to lose weight. Blah, Blah, Blah.

dr moz, health columbus, columbus chiropractorSTOP thinking about food as calories. Stop wondering how many Snickers Candy Bars you can fit in and stay under 1400 calories/day. Start thinking about food as fuel. The body needs a lot of fuel, it needs a large volume of food, and it really doesn’t care about calories. The body needs proteins to be broken into amino acids. The body needs carbs to be broken into glucose. The body needs fats to build hormones. The body does not care about how many calories are associated. The body needs vitamins to make each cell function. The body needs minerals to ensure muscle contractions are strong and organized. The body needs sunlight to be converted into Vitamin D.

Let me be clear. The body has no concern, governing body, or control over how many calories you eat. The body can store excess calories taken in as fat, and the body can utilize that fat tissue in a later date if you under eat calories, but this has no regard to your health or weight loss on a long term scale.

Do you want to know why the body does not prefer to run on the stored calories that you have as fat?

Do you want to know why these health risks that the ABC diet discusses are associated with under eating calories to lose weight?

Do you want to know why focusing on calories in, calories out, and no regard to nutrients or vitamins is detrimental to your health?

I say this because the body does not store the majority of micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals that are involved in the body’s daily metabolic functions in fat cells. There are a few fat soluble vitamins that can be stored, A, D, E, K, but in all actuality, these all act within the body more as hormones than vitamins, so they are not as relevant when discussing micronutrient intake in your diet. The water soluble vitamins, B-Complex, are utilized in every cell, in every muscle and are NOT stored in fat tissue. SO when you go days without eating the proper amounts of fuel, or food, your body will be running on the stored calories from your fat, but it will be depleted of the vitamins that are not able to be stored within the body. This means that the body does not govern the use of these vitamins, it does not ration them. It uses them as it gets them. So, the more you feed it, the more you will use, and this means the more calories your body will be able to utilize.
So why do the ABC Diet risk factors happen?

As I stated in this blog, calories in/calories out is not the holy grail of weight loss. There is much more to the epidemic of obesity.

But I can assure you that the risk factor of Depression is linked to a deficiency in B-Vitamins.

Symptoms of Vitamin B Deficiency
  • fears
  • fatigue
  • depression
  • paranoia
  • confusion
  • hostility
  • rage
  • anxiety

Symptoms of Neuropsychiatric Disorders
  • morbid fears
  • severe fatigue
  • depression
  • paranoia
  • confusion
  • anger
  • suicidal tendencies

So, before you go on a crash diet, or start skipping meals to “lose weight” be sure you consult a physician that can help you get on a safe and healthy diet plan.

Life, Without a Microwave...

Can you even imagine what it would be like to go into your kitchen not have the ability to cook a lean cuisine in three minutes, or not be able to heat up some left overs in 45 seconds?

Get Healthy With US
I study proper nutrition and healthy meal preparation, and as we all know, microwaves are bad news. They simply heat foods too quickly, destroy the structures of proteins, and leave your food even further depleted of nutrients than they were before. Microwaving your foods in plastic containers can release a number of health altering no-nos in just seconds, but that is not what I am writing about.

I am here to discuss what life is like without a microwave.

During the process of getting your health on track, the primary focus should be to consider what foods you are putting in your body. Secondly, you need to also address the emotional components that go into preparing those foods.

The principle of The New-Start Solution diet plan is eating single ingredient foods.  Going to the meat isle and buying fresh, unfrozen, grass fed beef, or organic chicken. These foods require nothing from a microwave, and this is why they rarely get purchased. Fresh broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, oranges, grapes, onions, or any other produce do not require the use of the microwave, and these foods are passed right by.
Instead, we all tread to the frozen food section and seek out the quick, fast, and in a hurry to prepare meals that can just be popped into a microwave. In just a matter of minutes, dinner is served.

What expense does this really have?

In America, we are living the microwave lifestyle, trying to get as much done in the shortest amount of time. We pass over the processes of enjoying the time we spend on this earth, slowing down our daily process and just doing the things that are vital for our survival. We wake up, pop a toaster strudel in the microwave, cover it with glaze, and then race off to work. For lunch, we seek a fast food restaurant because they can get us a cheeseburger and fries in about 2 minutes. Those foods are microwaved too. We scarf down the delicious treat as fast as possible because lunch hour is actually only 30 minutes in most jobs.

We have learned to budget minimal amounts of time to our most vital task of the day, food, and the microwave is the culprit. OK, I shouldn't only blame the microwave. Since the release of the microwave in the 1970-80s, not completely sure on the exact release date, but since then, many negative changes have been made to the American Lifestyle. From the food pyramid to industrialization of insurance companies, many negative things. But for the sake of this article, we can't focus on changing everything, just one thing at a time.

wellness newstart, newstart, mozingo, mozHow many times have you wanted popcorn, and got the stove fired up? Never, because popping a bag (this side up) in and pushing the popcorn button on the front of the miracle machine is so much more efficient.
Bacon is now precooked and just 1 minute away from the table. Canned vegetables can ready to dine in 5 minutes. Rice cooked in 90 seconds in a bag. Baked potatoes used to take 45 minutes, now 6. Frozen, packaged, pancakes are thawed and cooked in one special place in just seconds.

All of these things are the systematic design of the simpleton, fast-paced, way of life that we have grown accustomed to. The unfortunate part of all of this is:

YOUR HEALTH SUFFERS.

I have set my life up to maximize health and overall wellness by taking my life as far back to the basics as I can. I am in no way shape or form perfect, but I at least am trying. I have officially logged my personal telephone out of social media. I have taken time to restore friendships and conversation back to the basics of true, in person communications, and since January, I have started:

Life, without a Microwave.

Sure, this concept is cumbersome at times. Trying to get a two year old fed before they get upset without using a microwave can have its struggles. Reheating the leftovers from the night before is not as convenient, but I have spent more time connecting to the foods that I prepare for the family so much more. I can appreciate a wholesome cooked meal because I know that I didn’t take the easy way out. You learn so quickly which burner on the flat top stove heats up the fastest. You learn what temperature you need your skillet to be before you put the first dab of pancake batter on there. You fire the crock pot back up and plan a meal in the morning for the evening.

All things considered, life without a microwave has changed my way of thinking even more to the basics. Use the oven, cook bacon, mix pancake batters, and most importantly, connect with the food that you are eating. Food is the one source of life on this planet. Without food, you simply will not be. The health of every cell in your body is in direct relation to the quality of products you put on the end of your fork.

Do the Life, Without a Microwave Challenge.

columbus indiana chiropractor, massage columbus indianaI challenge each of my readers to try this for one week. Just 7 days. All you have to do is unplug your microwave, and let it sit.

It really isn’t hard to warm up leftovers. Just put them into a covered pot and turn the stove on. Sure, it will take 10 minutes, but what does this time matter? Are you really in too big of a hurry to apply 10 more minutes to a meal?

I can guarantee you one thing, if you are under the impression that you cannot live without the use of a microwave, your health is suffering. There are too many small things in life that you are missing, just because you are not taking time to appreciate it.

Do yourself a favor, take 7 days, pull the plug, and see how your life changes.

The Gateway Drug... Is it poison?

Gateway drug, newstart blogpoison [ˈpɔɪzÉ™n]
n
1. (Medicine) any substance that can impair function, cause structural damage, or otherwise injure the body

Seeing the title of this post, most people associate the term “poison” with a strange potion or concoction that is mixed up by witches with a large kettle or some venom that comes from the bite of a snake. But, the term poison can be used much more widely than the socially accepted idea.

Myself, and I am sure all of my readers, are not interested in ingesting something that is poisonous, right? We do not drink bleach, carpet cleaner, or gasoline, because we know that it will harm our health. We would never seek out a poisonous food and eat it, because all in all, we all want to be healthier today than we were yesterday.

It is pretty easy to understand that if you eat something poisonous, it will hurt your overall health, and no doctor would ever prescribe something that is poisonous, or something that will hurt your health, Right?

I wish it was true…

If you read the previous blog you will remember that we discussed the definition of disease. Disease is a result of an impairment of function. I discussed extensively how an antacid medication is the cause of disease because it impairs the stomachs ability to produce HCl.

After reading the blog myself, I realized that there is one point that I passed over. There is a definition for a substance that impairs a bodily function. As you can see above, the medicinal definition of POISON is any substance that can impair function.

What am I saying?

I think it is easy to make the connection that given the definitions of poison and disease, impairment of function is the major contributor to any bodily problem.

I kept trying to make a definitive correlation between antacid medication and the cause of disease, but now I think it is easy to understand how the proton pump inhibiting class of medications cause disease.
THEY ARE POISON.

By definition of poison, a substance that impairs function is a poison. If antacid medications impair the function of the stomach, they are, by definition, a poison. Right?

So lets be clear.

A poison is a substance that impairs bodily function. Disease is the expression of the body when it has an impaired function. So ingesting poison will cause disease. Antacids impair the body’s ability to produce HCl (a vital nutrient for digestion). Antacids are a poison, that cause disease.

I hope that after reading these three blogs on The Gateway Drug, you all are asking yourself, and everyone that you know if you are a victim of the gateway
drug, antacids. If you catch yourself suffering from heartburn, I want you to understand the decision you are making when you mask that pain with Tums, or Prilosec. You are absolutely putting a poisonous substance in your mouth, and further health problems are almost inevitable.

As you are probably finding out from my blogs, I have no problem with being blunt. I am only trying to educate each of you on the problems within our health care system. If you do not open your eyes to seek the truth, you and your family will fall down the treacherous path that our health care system wants you on. The only outcome of this path is simple… Poor health, and expensive health care costs.

Dr Mozingo's Food For Thought. Lose fat, build muscle

The New-Start Solution | Muscle and Strength

Nutrition | Lose Fat, Build Muscle
This phase is designed to lean out the diet, and start the body in muscle building mode. The food we eat is fuel for the body and muscles, and when you are starting a new weight training regimen, it is important to properly fuel the body, or you will suffer from decreased gains, and muscle fatigue.  This is not an easy program to follow exactly, but try to stay as true to it as you can.

Should I count calories?
Yes, when someone is trying to alter their physique, or build muscle, it is important to count calories to ensure they are getting enough. Yes, I said to ensure they are getting enough calories. Under eating could result in muscle fatigue, and also turn on specific enzymes that promote fat storage instead of muscle building. On average, we need about 15-18 calories per pound of body weight each day to maintain muscle tone, and to build muscle, it needs to go up to 18-20.  This being said, it is more important to balance where your calories are coming from than just the total number of calories being taken in.

Is protein important?
Muscles are made of protein, so in order to build bigger, stronger muscles you have to fuel them with their building blocks, like proteins. Several studies have shown that consuming 30-40% of total calories from protein sources on train days show a dramatic increase in muscle gains. This translates into 1 ½ - 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. The New-Start Solution program starts on the lower end of that, requiring 1 ½ grams of protein per pound of body weight. Protein sources should vary as well, eggs for example have about 8-12 grams of protein each, and an 8 ounce sirloin steak has about 55 grams of protein. So to be clear, it is important to consume 1 ½ have grams of protein per pound of body weight on train days (225 grams for 150lb person) and 1 gram on rest days.

Are carbohydrates important?
Carbohydrates act as the body’s energy, allowing for muscle contraction and also vital for glycogen storage. Glycogen is what stays in the muscle and pulls water into them making them fuller and allowing a stretch of the muscle fibers. When the muscle fibers stretch, it stimulates protein synthesis, building bigger stronger muscles. In the beginning, most people have plenty of store glycogen, so in Phase 1 The New-Start Solution suggests an intake of 1 gram of carbohydrates per pound of body weight on train days, and ½ grams per day on rest days.

Are fats important?
Fats are critical in the building block of testosterone and all other androgen hormones. Testosterone is a vital part of muscle building so eating adequate amounts of fat will boost testosterone levels. Omega-3 fats are an essential part of joint lubrication and nerve conduction. These fats are found in fatty fish and eggs. The New-Start Solution puts an emphasis on the importance of supplementing with ORGANIC Omega-3 oil and also consuming about ½ of your body weight in grams of fat/day. These intakes should be 1/3 saturated, 1/3 monounssaturated and 1/3 polyunsaturated fats.  Most meat products have this balance.

Is there any other tips for better gains?
  1. Eat frequently, 3-4 meals a day, with snacks in between is adequate.
  2. Always eat protein for breakfast
  3. Eat eggs. 3 eggs a day has been proven to promote bigger gains.
  4. Eat casein protein before bed. This allow for muscle building during the long hours of sleep.
  5. Eat your veggies. The micronutrients found in vegetables will fuel the body on a cellular level.

Diet plan or Gym?… Health, it’s what you eat

It’s 2013, and we all have to make that big decision, do we want to be healthier than we were in 2012, or not?

New Year has come and passed, and most of us have made a resolution to get healthy, so we sign up at the local gym, go to GNC and get the latest and greatest fat loss miracle, and get started. It is not news that exercise is a vital part of becoming a healthier person, but we often look over the fact that it only accounts for about 20% of weight loss and health. The vast majority of our health is based on what is at the end of our fork. This is why most resolutions fail. This is why we never see the results we desire from the hard work at the gym. Each time you go to the gym you burn about 200-300 calories.

This is a good start, but if you eat one cheeseburger, drink one fountain drink, or eat one Snickers bar, you are going to negate every bit of that workout. I am guilty of this just as much as anyone is, if I go to the gym and get a good set in, I feel like I am allowed to reward myself with something. That reward is always a food that will negate the great benefits I just got at the gym, and it is back to square one the next day.

A wash on the day for health is better than the average American, because statistically the majority of Americans gain weight every single day, so if you are able to maintain a weight and not gain you are actually showing benefits. But this is not was we want, is it? We want to lose a ton of weight in a hurry. We want a six pack by spring.

The hardest part of my position is to try to put rational goals in place for each patient. Weight loss greater than 3 lbs per week is too much and will shock the body and cause health damage. So, it is important to be patient and set a goal of about 10 lbs per month. Eating a reduced calorie diet is effective, but it is important to take some focus away from just calorie in calorie out and remember that without adequate levels of vital nutrients, the body will not allow you to lose weight.

Here are some quick tips on how to maximize your weight loss results:
  1. Do not drink your calories
  2. Avoid all grains
  3. Make vegetables your primary food
  4. Eat only foods with ONE ingredient
  5. Avoid processed food
Remember…

If you live the common American lifestyle, and eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), chances are, your health will worsen this year, just as it did last year and the year before that. We are living in a way that has led to a decline in our health and an incline in our waist line. The New-Start Solution is a plan that will work very effectively to restore your health and help you reach your New Year’s goal.

Health Care? or Sick Care? New-Start Health Center Shines a light

In our current society and medical model, we have lost touch of what true health is, or how to achieve it. We are victims of the media that leads us to believe that our health is in the hands of hospitals or doctors and the easily accessible medications and surgeries that go along with them.

If we do become sick, ill, or diseased, our health insurance system has led us to believe that ONLY they know what treatments are deemed “medically necessary”, and only these treatments will be covered under your insurance plans.

Wouldn’t “Health Care” cover preventative care, eliminating the process of developing disease? Yes, it would, But this is not the what we are used to. We are under “Sick Care” and we are forced to wait until we have become sick before any health care plan will cover it. And ironically, if you have been previously diagnosed with a condition, the health insurance company will not help you over come it. Strange?

“Yes, I Think so.”

Is this method working?

"No, I don't think so."

Is the health of our fellow Americans a reflection of that answer?

“Yes, I think so.”

But how can we know whether or not that these methods of care working?  How can we decide if we are being misled?

Weight Loss? How do I lose weight?

The most common instinct for us to lose weight is one thing: stop eating so much.

This could be accurate, but only if you approach it correctly.

Stop eating so much sugar and trans fats is the only scenario that really stands true. Counting calories is never a good approach to losing weight because calories are not created equal. A 1200 calories/day regimen is the most common approach to losing weight right now.

Here is the thing, you cannot eat 200 calories a day of spinach and lettuce, and 1000 calories a day of soda. You are still following a 1200 calories/day diet, but the programming of the food changes the way the body reacts to the food, and the empty calories in soda are nothing like the nutrient rich calories of spinach. If you were to consume 2000 calories/day of spinach and 2000 calories of lean baked chicken, you are consuming much more than 1200 calories, but you are also boosting your metabolism, staying in a metabolic state for the entirety of the day, and eventually weight loss will happen.

60% of your daily expenditure of calories should come from metabolism, and the only way to do that, is to feed the digestive system with low glycemic foods, and feed it often.

Skipping meals to lower calorie intake will not work either. When the stomach becomes empty, it releases an enzyme called ghrelin. This enzyme is what triggers hunger. When the body is hungry, it goes in to a state of starvation, which slows metabolism, stores as much energy (fat) as it can, and stimulates your urge to eat. Bad eating habits happen when we are in this state, because cravings are at their highest, and sugar rich foods are always what we want. If we give in to these cravings, we will always be in a fat storage mode, and the cycle will continue.

There is only one solution for optimum and healthy weight loss. You must consume many small meals during the day. Each meal should contain each of the vital macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrate). You need to consume these together to ensure a low glycemic load of the meal, to maximize metabolic function, and to increase your body’s ability to maintain a stable glucose:insulin level. Stabilizing insulin is one of the most important factors in fat loss. Fat is a stored energy, and it is very difficult to get the body to attack these fat stores and utilize them as energy. Glucagon is the hormone that is released from the pancreas that retrieves energy from fat cells to maintain a healthy blood glucose level.  Glucagon is antagonist to Insulin, so if our insulin levels are increased, Glucagon will not be expelled from the pancreas, and fat cell content will not be affected. Insulin levels are regulated by diet, eat many small meals that have a low glycemic index, high protein and fat intake, and consume less sugar. I mean, consume ZERO added sugar.

Weight loss is not found behind the latest fad diet. It is not behind the newest surgical procedure. At New-Start, weight loss is made easy. The New-Start Solution is designed to maximize metabolism, regulate insulin levels, and help you lose weight without any magical pills, surgeries, or crazy diet restrictions.

What Should I Eat? Omega-3 Oil

There is a lot of buzz about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in the media, and there cannot be enough emphasis of the importance for healthy living. Omega-3 fatty acids have three basic forms that are utilized in the human body, ALA, DHA, and EPA. The actual names are not important as they are a long scientific name, instead I will discuss why they are important. Today, I want you to learn about ALA.

ALA is a plant form of omega-3 fatty acid, found in flax seed, canola oil, olive oil, etc. ALA is responsible for taking Calcium from the blood to the tissue. This transportation is vital to keep our skin healthy. Calcium deficiency in the skin can cause hives, canker sores (Herpes), and eczema. Calcium in the skin is important in fighting infection, so we need ALA to transport Calcium to the skin to protect us from bacteria if we happen to get a cut in our skin.

I want you to start thinking of how each of the nutrients in the body are working together to create a healthy system. You have most likely seen a vitamin D supplement that you can buy from the store, and it usually says "with Calcium." Why is that you ask? Vitamin D binds to Calcium to be transported from our tissues to the blood. So as we spend time in the sun, the oil in our skin is converted to vitamin D, and to get into the blood it utilizes the Calcium that is stored in our skin. As we spend time in the sun, we begin to tan, and eventually end with a sun burn. When we become sun burned from the sun, this is simply a deficiency of Calcium in the skin, because it has all been utilized to transport the vitamin D to the blood tissue. Sun stroke, skin cancer, and elevated blood pressure has been linked to elevated blood serum levels of Calcium, and decreased tissue levels of Calcium.

OK, back to ALA fatty acids. As previously stated, ALA is responsible for transporting Calcium from the blood, back to the tissue. IF you want to protect your skin, and your health, be sure to optimize your Vitamin D levels and ALA omega-3 levels.

Take the Vitamin D Deficiency Quiz and the Omega-3 Deficiency Quiz to find out if you need to balance your levels, and improve your health.

Weight Loss, A Side Effect to Healthy Living

Almost every person in America has thought about ways to lose weight. We look at weight loss as becoming heathier, but health is not a direct relation to weight. Health is a lifestyle. Fad diets, caffeine loaded supplements, and short term weight loss programs are not the answer to either weight loss or becoming healthier, instead, its a journey. The journey has a very detailed set of steps to achieve true health.

  1. Purification: The American diet has left our body ridiculed with toxins, fats, and poor digestion. The first step in becoming healthy is to rid the body of toxins, start the fat buring process, and stimulate good digestion.
  2. Supplementation: Eating healthy has become more and more difficult. Fast paced lives and factory farmed foods have left our bodies depleted of all natural vitamins and micronutrients. Organic, whole food supplementation is necessary to fill the voids in the American Diet.
  3. Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care: When a person is in pain, it is difficult to be motivated to exercise, eat healthy or improve their health. Sedentary lifestyles, improper lifting techniques, and poor biomechanics leaves the body with many pain syndromes. Muscle imbalances, spinal fixations, tendon/ligament sprains and strains are a few of the many conditions that can be treated with chiropractic care.
  4. Increase Physical Output: This is the final step of achieving HEALTH. After chiropractic care has introduced the body to pain free movement, it is crucial to get up and keep the body in motion. Exercise has many benefits to the body, relieves stress, increases energy, increases libido, and INCREASES HEALTH.

If you follow these four simple steps, it is Clear to see that WEIGHT LOSS is a side effect of becoming healtier.
