3 Years and Some Change

Upon graduating for Palmer College of Chiropractic, Florida in December 2011, I set out to create a health center that bases its principles around changing what you think and know about the medical system. With a strong grasp on Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care and an evolving knowledge on nutritional therapy, tying the two holistic medicine approaches together would be the premise of New-Start Health Center.

Opening a business that is designed to go against the grain is never easy. Fresh out of college, I definitely felt on my own. There are many chiropractic management companies that are designed to help young businesses get off the ground, but I wanted to pioneer something unique. The primary disconnect for myself and chiropractic management companies is the overall feeling of chiropractic in our society. We have all heard the horror stories of going to a chiropractor, “once you go you have to go forever” or “they spend 2 minutes with you and just crack your back”. Trying to change the mind of the majority on how New-Start is a different style of chiropractic. Evidence-Based Chiropractic does not X-ray every patient. We treat pain syndromes and we release them from care. I spend about 12-15 minutes with every patient, minimum. This is a dramatic change to the stereotypical chiropractic visit.

As I stated, an evolving knowledge on nutritional therapy, I have spent countless hours in a biochemistry book, in seminars, and scouring the internet for research studies to figure out exactly what is going wrong. The common medical practices for diabetes and obesity have fallen short. We are getting sicker, fatter, and unhealthier at a faster rate than ever previously recorded. Unfortunately, healthcare costs are also at an all-time high and climbing quickly. In the anecdotal world, the treatment of conditions starts with covering up the symptoms, and with low back pain, or migraines, this is not detrimental. When you start to use this approach toward an inflammatory condition like Diabetes or Obesity, more problems arise.

After years of research it seems, 5 or 6 book starters, I am proud to be writing a book called, How Health Comes Apart. The idea behind this book is the primary focus of the nutritional therapy side of New-Start Health Center. I am writing my research to change America’s way of thinking about our obesity epidemic.

In three years, New-Start Health Center has been all about change. Change how chiropractic is viewed and utilized. Change how we diagnose and treat obesity and diabetes, and change how medical systems define success. The first three years in the Columbus area have been encouraging, insightful, and rewarding.  I am proud to be a part of the maturity of New-Start Health Center, and with many more years to come, to continue to change for the better.

Why Can’t I Seem to Lose Weight, and Keep IT OFF?!?!?!

Why Can’t I Seem to Lose Weight, and Keep IT OFF?!?!?!

Weight loss Columbus Indiana, weight loss Columbus, lose weight in Columbus, how to lose weight, nutritional advice in Columbus, Columbus Indiana nutrition, Columbus Indiana weight clinic, weight loss clinic in Columbus, wellness coach in Columbus, wellness, health clinic in Columbus, new-start, newstart, newstart health center, new-start Columbus, wellness in ColumbusThis is a pretty serious question, and as most of the American population can relate to the epidemic of obesity, I feel it is a question that is not only misunderstood, but misguided. Weight loss has become a very profitable industry, reaching $60.5 billion in sales in 2014. With 69% of America’s 20+ year old population being overweight (according to 2011-2012 CDC) and climbing, I would say the industry that has set out to make $BILLIONS$ has some explaining to do.

So, what do I mean by a question that is misunderstood and misguided?

We have an entire weight loss industry that has put themselves in place to answer this easy enough question, and it seems, they are simply failing to either figure out what people are asking, or failing to provide a relative solution to the problem at hand. People are getting more overweight while using these products. Or even worse, people lose a ton of weight on a special product, and as soon as they stop taking it, BOOM, an additional 15 pounds gets added.

No sustainable weight loss miracle has been created, and yet, the industry keeps their Dr. Oz recommended, green tea, miracle berry, super protein powder, crap on the shelf of every supermarket, gas station, bus stop, and car wash to ensure to the masses that they, in fact, have the secret weapon against the invading fat cells.

At the end of the day, everything that is in our face about weight management is a big misconception to ensure ongoing profits for the industry. I spend a lot of time researching the metabolic functions of the body. I have a clear understanding of the plethora of hormones that are involved in weight loss, and it almost astonishes me that these companies continue to market complete fallacies. To be honest, weight loss is a complex subject, with many different interpretations. Some try to blame it solely on genetics, and others try to blame it on bad luck. With the research I have found, these two excuses just do not work for me.

So, the big question remains… Why can’t I seem to lose weight and keep it off?

Well, I can assure you that lack of effort is not the issue. It seems that everyone that is a client to the weight loss industry has tried absolutely everything. I have seen patients taking a miracle pill that is supposed to shed the fat, and no effort is necessary on their part. The problem persists in the effort given. It seems that we will spend a fortune, put faith in every single cockamamie diet pill, and try so hard to believe that they will work just like it shows on TV or the advertisement. We are putting in so much effort to keep us from actually having to put in effort? Yes, I understand that sounds ridiculous.

Newsflash… If a product or weight loss solution tells you that you do not need to make any lifestyle changes, and their product is the end all beat all, no effort needed to lose weight, or if they tell you that you do not need to change your diet and the product will just curb your appetite. DO NOT BUY THIS GIMMICK. Yes, that product does sound too good to be true, because it is.

EEERRRT. Get back on track here…

I am always asked this question, and I always have the same answer. If you want to know how to lose weight, first you have to understand what causes weight gain.

  • 1.       Diet: The quality of the food you eat is the most important factor in regards to weight loss. 80% of the responsibility for weight gain and weight loss has to do with what you put in your mouth. If you are thinking you are eating the right foods because it says it is ZERO CALORIES or FAT FREE, you are probably eating the exact foods that cause weight gain. Processed foods that are loaded with sugars, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and any amount of crazy scientific ingredients are the foods that are causing your weight gain issues.

  • 2.       Stress: The hormone cascade involved with elevated emotional stress will only wreak havoc you your metabolic function.  Please understand, stress plays a vital role in how our nervous systems react. If you are in a stressful situation, it will stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, and your flight or fight response kicks in. During this time, the parasympathetic nervous system is shut down, digestion is shut down, and every other metabolic function is shut down to keep your energy focused on running or fighting a stimulus. Which takes me to my next bullet point.

  • 3.       Digestion: I understand that most want to blame their weight struggles on a faulty thyroid gland, but I can ensure you, your digestive function is vastly more important, and a sluggish digestive system is possible the root cause of your thyroid woes. If your body is unable to digest food properly, (given that you are actually eating food that is, well, food) you will not be able to break down these foods and assimilate the vital nutrients that the body needs to function. If your body is void of the vital nutrients, it is in stress (see previous bullet). Thyroid, adrenal, cardiovascular, and every other function of the body needs a constant influx of vital nutrients, if your diet, and your digestion system are not providing these building blocks, your weight will suffer.

  • 4.       Exercise: Understand that the time spent at the gym, or the calories burned while you are on a treadmill, plays a minimal part on your weight. Exercise is beneficial in the form of a system for increasing muscle mass in the body. The body’s resting metabolic rate (RMR), or the amount of calories you can burn at rest, is directly related to the amount of muscle mass you have. If you want to increase your RMR, you need to increase your muscle mass. This is what exercise if for. If you are not active, your muscle mass will diminish and your RMR will crash.

As I stated, if you truly want to know why you can’t seem to lose weight, first you have to understand what is causing you to gain weight in the first place. This is where I stand behind the comment that if a product tells you that all you have to do is take their miracle pill and change nothing, IT WILL FAIL. Sure you might lose some weight initially, make yourself a true believer, and then it all comes crashing back on. This is because you have failed to remove the one thing that is causing the problem at hand.

To be clear, if you eat processed foods, even just one a day, you gain weight. If you do not exercise at all, and your muscle mass is going down the tubes, you gain weight. If you are going through a stressful time, and you know that you are having a difficult time dealing with it, you will gain weight. If you digestive system is not working properly, you have heartburn, you have intermittent diarrhea or constipation, you gain weight.

I do understand that you know someone who went through a tough time and they couldn’t eat and they seemed to wilt away to nothing. Or, sometimes a digestive system is all mixed up, and people seem to be unable to gain weight. And I also have seen those pesky people that seem to be able to eat ANYTHING THEY WANT, and never gain a pound. Rest assured, this is a major point that we address at New-Start Health Center.

I will not go on and on about the unhealthy relationship between weight and health as we all have seemed to become accustomed to. But to be clear, if you know someone who is not overweight, but they seem to eat sugary product after sugary product, iff you know someone that is too stressed out to eat and they are wilting away, they are not healthy. Sure, they may appear to be at a healthy weight, but their metabolic function is in distress. Each person’s body fat storage function is different. But I have to encourage you not to envy someone who can eat whatever crap they want and not gain weight. Their health is struggling and due to the vanity of America, we still allow them to assume a healthy status. This is dangerous.

So, the first part of answering the primary question is this: You need to understand what causes weight gain if you ever want to stop it.

Fun Analogy Time!!!

Think of weight gain or being overweight as a pink room. You are not interested in the room being pink anymore. In fact, you want to change it to a white room (lose weight). To start this process, first you have to realize some very important factors. How the room became pink? What you have to do to get it to turn white, and finally, what you need to do to keep it from turning pink again? Now, it is easy to understand how that room became pink, right? Someone took the pink paint, put in on a roller, and painted to their hearts content. And you obviously know to turn the room white. You take white paint, put it on a roller, and paint to your hearts content. The biggest disconnect between being overweight and weight loss, and getting a pink room to turn white is the simple step of, what do you need to do to keep it from turning pink again?

The current model we have in place for weight loss is missing this important step. If you have not learned what has made your room turn pink, or made you gain weight, if you do not understand how to keep it from coming back after you lose weight, then you are in a winless battle. Every single diet plan that I have researched, and every single miracle pill that tells you that you do not have to change anything is like painting your wall with white paint and then your friend coming in right behind you and accidently dripping bright red paint into your bucket without you even noticing. You just keep trying and trying to get a pink wall to turn white, but the material you are using, will only leave it the same color. Depending on how many coats you try to apply, you could even end up with a darker shade of pink. (The analogy here is that you will actually end a diet weighing more than what you actually started)

OK, that was fun. Now, let’s clean up this answer, shall we?

So many people are struggling with weight gain, obesity, and overall poor health in America. So many people are searching high and low to figure how why them, why are they overweight, how did they get this unlucky? To be honest, it is on you. It is not all your genetics fault, your doctor’s fault, or even your personal trainer’s fault.

You have to understand that your lifestyle is the predominant cause of weight gain. The food you eat,
the stress you have around you, the amount of exercise you perform, is all on you.

Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in ColumbusIf you want to lose weight, you have to start by addressing the cause, AND GET HELP. You need help from your family, friends, loved ones, coworkers, etc. You need the people around you to understand your goals, and understand what it is going to take for you to get your weight on track. YOU HAVE TO STAY FOCUSED.

So many people go into The New-Start Solution with intentions of losing 50 pounds in 5 days and then they get to go back to eating pizza and Doritos. This is just not a reality. The New-Start Solution is a Lifestyle Change. A rebirth into a healthy style of living. Call it what you want but it is not a diet or miracle system. It is simply the most basic form of eating that makes your body more efficient.

With all of my research, it all comes back to this one simple rule:

If you want to lose weight, and I mean truly lose weight… Look at yourself in the mirror. When you start to think about what you want to change, do not even think about the vanity standpoint of getting into a smaller size of pants. Do not waste your time thinking about what you ideal weight is. Instead, think about what you want to change to get there.

Doctors that listen, Care

A subjective indication of a disorder or disease, such as pain, nausea, or weakness

The current medical system has set itself up in a way to minimize the amount of time a physician spends with a patient. It is a simple concept. Too many sick people, too many cases, and not enough time for doctors to cover them all.

Unfortunately this has led our health status into a melting pot of undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, over tested, under analyzed patients. So many physicians do not have time to spend taking a thorough history, so instead of listening to the concerns and complaints of a patient, and going through all of the symptomatology that the patient presents with, it is common to order an excessive amount of unnecessary tests to come up with a diagnosis.

While attending Palmer College of Chiropractic, I learned the most valuable thing about being a physician.

80% of our diagnosis should come from the history of the patient. We need to speak to patients for as long as it takes to come up with a very concise decision that supports the indication to do additional testing.

If you look back at the top of this article, you will see that the very definition of a symptom explains it perfectly. Symptoms are a SUBJECTIVE indication of a disease or dysfunction. Listen to what the patient is saying, but more importantly understand how the body works so you can utilize the information that is given during a thorough history.

The process of coming up with an accurate diagnosis of a patient starts with a physician’s understanding of the human body. There is absolutely no cookie cutter flow chart to be followed that will work on every single patient. Certain dysfunctions can be expressed differently in every patient, but you have to dig deeper.

When a patient discusses a symptom, it is just the tip of the iceberg. You have to know everything about that symptom. You have to know which questions to ask and how to interpret the responses.

Lets go through a scenario:

A 39 year old female patient presents with mid to low back pain.
Symptom: back pain.

Some physicians will immediately lean toward an X-ray to rule out things. Some might automatically prescribe a muscle relaxer. NSAIDs are always suggested. Maybe ice, massage, or even electric stimulation.

Chiropractors are famous for immediately linking to a spinal subluxation and an adjustment will fix it up.

What questions should be asked?

Location of the back pain? How long has it been going on? Does anything relieve it or make it worse? All physicians understand the whole OPPQRST bit, but do they use it?

Is a kidney exam indicated? Gall Bladder stones? Lumbar disc derangement? Did they fall and break a rib? Diverticulitis?

The point I am trying to make is this; a symptom as simple as back pain can have many different diagnoses. There is any amount of testing that you can order to search for the correct condition. The true physician will minimize the cost to a patient by ruling out some of the differential diagnoses, and minimize any testing required.

Pain is definitely the most common symptom that encourages a person to seek medical attention. Low back pain being number one in the US.

The symptom of pain seems to be the one hardest to deal with, the hardest for a patient to overlook, but there are so many more symptoms that must be analyzed by a physician that is seeking a true diagnosis. Symptoms like, restless at night, weight gain, low body temperature, elevated pulse, frequent urination, and so many more are how the body expresses its state of health.

The body will tell a physician a story. They just have to listen to it. More importantly, they must not look at any patient with a predetermined mentality of what is wrong. This is how a misdiagnosis happens.

The most common complaint that I hear from patients is that their primary physician doesn’t really listen to them.

Has this ever happened to you?

It is probably not the physician’s fault. They work in a health system with too many sick people, and unfortunately, testing is profitable and major hospitals are a business. All business’s like making profit, so the more testing they order, the more money they make.

I like to be a cost effective physician, but even more so, I like to be accurate. It is not hard to come up with a diagnosis if you just listen, and ask the right questions. I order tests when needed. I order imaging if necessary. They are NEVER my primary source of coming up with a diagnosis. I run at about a 90% rate of using diagnostic testing to confirm what I already determined from a thorough history. I only test if my safe, non-invasive treatment plan is not providing the results I think the patient deserves. Physicians have to start being fair, and not going beyond their expertise.

The New-Start Difference

We analyze symptoms, or objective findings to conclude a status of health. The system is designed to save money on unnecessary testing for a condition that is indicated with simple symptoms. At New-Start, all we need to know is exactly how you feel. What symptoms you are suffering from. We use this to give you a very thorough description of your health status.

Leptin and Ghrelin,The Mysterious Hormones Related to Weight Management.

Leptin and Ghrelin, the mysterious hormones related to weight loss and weight gain

I am going to start this blog by saying this.

trent mozingo, dr moz, dr mozingo, chiropractor dr mozingoThe current struggles with weight loss and weight management has become a very serious topic. The health status in this country continues to plummet and every physician should be setting out to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Again, I said every physician or health advocate should be setting out to tackle this epidemic…
NOT,
every direct marketing connoisseur that is out to make a quick buck and get 7000 people under them so they can get a FREE BMW or whatever, by selling some miracle product with green coffee beans, Garcinia cambogias, acai berries, fat incinerators, metabolism boosters, etc.

If you are dead set that some weight loss pill is going to give you the results you want, you should stop reading now. To fully understand weight loss, you have to detach yourself from the thinking that you just need something to help boost your metabolism or just to eat less calories.

I apologize for that rant, but this is an important subject, and I get approached about three times a week with a new miracle pill and these sales persons just refuse to listen to the truths about scientific weight management.

Weight management is a very complex subject, and if you do not try to understand biochemistry on a hormonal level, you will never fully understand it.

Weight management is not just calories in, calories out.

This blog is not designed to give you all the answers you need to lose the weight you desire. This is not a concise weight loss plan. This is just a basis of information for you to take to your health care provider to discuss your goals and hopefully they will get you on a winning program.

This blog is here to help.

I am writing about two of the most currently researched hormones in regard to weight management, Leptin and Ghrelin. These two play a vital role in the maintenance of weight and appetite. There are many more hormones involved in the process of weight management, so to get the full story of what I am discussing, you should wait for further blogs, or the release of my first book, The 5:1 Weight Loss System.

The concept of leptin and ghrelin is very complex, confusing, and maybe not fully understood by any scientific practitioner. There have been countless amounts of research of these vital hormones, and many theories have been created. Sometimes, the concept can even confuse the person writing about these two hormones. I follow Dr. Mercola and a lot of his writing is spot on. But as you can read here in an article about sleep deprivation and overweight children you will see that his writing is conflicting of itself.

There are studies that show that ghrelin is the master hormone that regulates appetite, and in bariatric surgery, the majority of the weight lost can be linked to the removal of part of the stomach, inhibiting the body’s ability to produce ghrelin by association, decreasing the person’s appetite, and helping them achieve satiety with less volume. As you can see, in Dr. Mercola’s writing, he states that when children sleep more, they have benefits like lower levels of the hormone leptin. Then, the next paragraph states that if you are sleep deprived, you have decreased production of leptin??? This sounds very conflicting, right? Well it gets worse.

Other studies that analyze the serum levels of ghrelin showed that ghrelin levels are already decreased in populations with increased body fat tissue, and increased in leaner individuals, because ghrelin is responsible for helping the body eat less and decrease weight gain. So prior to the bariatric surgery, the overall levels of ghrelin are decreased in comparison to a leaner individual who isn’t a candidate for bariatric surgery. (Huh?)

Some studies show that weight loss can spike ghrelin levels in the body, trying to encourage weight gain while another study states that regaining weight after diet induced weight loss can be seen in patients with high leptin levels and low ghrelin. (Face palm)

I can go as deep as to discuss how ghrelin and leptin are related to insulin, and studies show that ghrelin inhibit the production of insulin, which is both bad and good, and insulin increases the secretion of leptin, which again, can be bad and good. Insulin promotes weight gain, but studies show that leptin promotes weight loss. (Pull my hair out)

I have put a list of cited articles at the end of this paper. You can read through them if you want, but trust me, the more you read about these two hormones, the more confused you are going to get. Heck, I am already confused about what I just wrote to give you a brief description of the research of these two complex hormones.

trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in columbus So to be clear and concise, the general rule throughout the majority of research studies and physician beliefs of ghrelin is that it is the unwanted hormone because it drives hunger, and Leptin is desired to be elevated in the blood stream, and the only real problem with leptin is that you become resistant to its affects, similar to insulin.

There is a general concept that I want you to understand about this subject...

This article is my interpretation of many clinical studies of the two complex hormones of leptin and ghrelin. You can read any amount of research and satisfy your own craving for knowledge if you wish.

You can read Dr. Mercola, Hyman, or any other physician that has read the same research and tried to make some sense out of how Leptin is GOOD, and Ghrelin is BAD and how you don’t want to become “Leptin Resistant.”

I have read many different articles about this subject, and they ALL have one very specific thing in common..

THEY ARE ALL WRONG!?!?!?!
Rephrase, they have very accurate research, but the interpretations are all backwards.

Again, this is my interpretation. If you do not agree with my fundamental principles of these hormones, feel free to comment.

Chicken and egg scenario.
Ghrelin is not the enemy or the savior. Neither is leptin. These two hormones can neither be praised nor scorned, they are just trying to do their job and they each get in the way of one another.

To describe the properties of these two hormones, would take a six page article in itself, so to be short and clear, I just want you to understand the basics of these two.

Ghrelin is a hormone that is released from the stomach and is linked to the impulse of hunger. Leptin is released from fat cells and linked to the feeling of satiety or fullness. These two hormones are inhibitory of each other, meaning, when one is elevated in the body, the other is decreased. Meaning, if you have severe hunger your stomach has produced a lot of ghrelin, and this will inhibit your fat cells from releasing any leptin.
It is easy to relate to ghrelin being bad, because it promotes hunger, and it is easy to promote the praise of leptin because it shuts off hunger... SORRY, scratch that way of thinking.

The most relevant studies have been made about the two hormones, but just like any scientific experiment, you first need to have a hypothesis, then experiment to prove whether it was right or wrong. The vast majority of these studies had the principle hypothesis of how leptin is good and achieves satiety and how ghrelin is bad and makes us fat.

First, you have to look at the propaganda involved in the production of these studies. Who is going to benefit from the positive outcome of the findings. Bariatric surgical centers want you to believe that ghrelin is the devil, and if you get this surgery you will reduce the production of ghrelin and give you health. Hormone clinics want you to believe that leptin is good, but you just have a hormone imbalance that needs addressed to decrease your chances of developing leptin resistance.

I have no bias to why people gain wait, or why it is so difficult to lose it. I have no ties to any clinic other than New-Start Health Center, so I only benefit from knowing the truth, and getting positive results in regard to weight loss. I have no reason to jump on any bandwagon with physicians that write beautiful articles discussing what they have found by reading research. To me, regurgitating the information from a research study is doing nothing more than become a proponent of whoever wanted the study performed. Instead, I think outside the box, design my own opinion, with no ulterior motive, unless you consider getting unparalleled results inside of my clinic, motive.

Now I have procrastinated long enough from giving you the goods that I promised, so here goes.

Start by thinking this, ghrelin is supposed to be high, and leptin is supposed to be low in the body.

Do not concern yourself with leptin resistance, or elevated ghrelin will make you hungry and overeat. Instead understand that leptin is produced from fat cells. If you have excess fat cells, you will produce excess leptin, seem simple enough?

With each article that I have read, it is clear that when you lose weight, leptin levels drop dramatically, and ghrelin levels increase. The reason for this is that ghrelin is the master hormone regulator of your body weight, but more importantly your, LEAN BODY MASS. Your body does not want to experience any radical changes in your lean body mass because it sees this as stress on the body and will put you into starvation mode. When you are in starvation mode, your metabolism will slow down and further the problem.  Dieting often results in us under eating the adequate amount of calories, and when this happens, your starvation mode, or natural preservation, system in the body will maintain your fat cell stores of energy, and you will start to break down your muscles for energy. Unfortunately, when you see the scale moving in a downward direction, this is bad, because you are decreasing your muscle mass, decreasing your lean body mass, and decreasing your resting metabolic rate (RMR). The RMR is your body’s ability to burn calories at rest. The only way to affect this is to alter your lean body mass. As you can see, altering your RMR, or altering your lean body mass will alter your ghrelin.

So what does ghrelin want?

The average American gains weight very slowly and steadily. If you were to gain 1-4 pounds a year, the body will not register this as a major insult to the body, so what happens is ghrelin levels are reduced ever so slowly and fat content rises. With the rising fat cells, more leptin will be produced. So according to a clinical study, overweight people have a lower level of ghrelin, and a higher level of leptin in regard to leaner individuals will make sense.

Ghrelin is satisfied when your lean body mass does not change, so when you sit at a desk all day and do nothing to promote muscle mass increase, your lean body mass will stay the same. Your fat content will grow and grow, but you will have no change to your muscles or organ structures. Ghrelin levels must go down, because as I stated before, the two hormones are inhibitory of each other. If you put on fat mass, and produce more leptin, your body’s natural reaction is to decrease the release of ghrelin.

Leptin resistance is the new fad reasoning for this phenomenon of elevated levels of leptin and is compared to insulin resistance.

I have to agree, and as promised I am going to stay on track of talking about leptin and ghrelin without soapboxing about insulin, but I have to state this.

Leptin resistance and insulin resistance are very similar. Most clinical studies of insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes have a very specific bias and principle that is also BACKWARDS.

There is nothing wrong with your insulin, you just have too much of it that makes you resistant. You have too much of it because you have eating too much sugar. This is the same as leptin. There is nothing wrong with your leptin that causes resistance, you just have too much of it which solidifies my principle thinking..

Start by thinking this, ghrelin is supposed to be high, and leptin is supposed to be low in the body.

Lets get back to the point.

We are all interested in how I make sense of weight loss and these two complex hormones.
Well here goes, the only way to effectively lose weight and maintain the new weight, is to satisfy my principle thinking of these two hormones, elevate ghrelin, and decrease leptin.

Maybe you need more convincing of this principle.

It is impossible to lose weight with elevated insulin levels in the body, instead you need insulin levels low and elevated glucagon levels. Glucagon is the opposite of insulin, it removed energy from fat cells instead of storing it.

Well guess what hormone inhibits the release of insulin and promotes the release of glucagon?

Ghrelin, good ole ghrelin.

So back to the principles, you want elevated ghrelin because it will inhibit the release of insulin and promote the release of the fat burning hormone, glucagon.

Elevated insulin levels increase the release of leptin. Elevated insulin inhibits glucagon. Can you see what I mean?

IF you need this in more detail, I will explain it more clearly in my book, The 5:1 Weight Loss System.

Why weight loss is not easy?

You can not just eat less, exercise, and expect to lose weight properly. Again, this concept will reduce your lean body mass and make your ghrelin levels spike to cause the yo-yo dieting effect.

It is important to stop focusing on the scale to measure your weight loss. Instead, look into fat loss, or the conversion of fat tissue into muscle tissue. Typically, on a clean diet and exercise regimen, you shouldn’t even see a loss of weight for a few weeks. Adjusting your macronutrients will allow you to start to lose fat tissue, but you have to make sure you eat adequate proteins and fats to maintain your lean body mass.

Under eating causes a whole cascade of events, including a decrease in the function of thy thyroid. You will see your body temperature drop, and you metabolic function will suffer.

In conclusion:

The main concept that I want you to take from this writing is that the common fad about weight management and the issues inhibiting weight loss are typically in error. Leptin resistance is not as much of an issue as it is portrayed. You have to lose weight accurately, without crash dieting to maintain your lean body mass, and if you lose it, you will spike your ghrelin and start the cycle of yo-yo dieting. Under eating, over exercising, and starvation can all cause this negative release of the hormone ghrelin.

You need to have elevated ghrelin when losing weight to inhibit the release of insulin, and spike the release of glucagon. If your leptin remains high, and in obese people, it is, you will have elevated insulin, estrogen, and other weight storing hormones.

Do not worry about leptin resistance, because with effective weight loss, your leptin levels plummet and your metabolism will not fall into the trenches. You will maintain your energy levels, and as the weight comes off you will even see an improvement.

Stay Tuned for more on the rest of the hormones involved in this ever so complex concept, and remember, health is not a destination, it is a journey.
