Should I Vaccinate My Children? Question 1

First big question of the blog:

Should I vaccinate my children?

should i vaccinate, vaccinations are bad, are vaccinations bad, is it good to vaccinate, new-start, newstart, dr mozingo, trent mozingo, evidence based medicine, who should get vaccinations, which vaccinations are bad, autism, autism and vaccinations, do vaccinations cause autism.I am going to start this post by making it clear that I do not have any children, so, I understand that it is easy to tell me that I cannot possibly understand what it feels like to make that decision.  I am in no way trying to persuade you either way, I am simply an unbiased writer helping everyone to be informed.

Let’s talk about that though. I commonly hear the remark; you just don’t understand what it feels like to make that decision for your child, someone you have bared, etc. All this is telling me is that most of us in the US have decided the choice of vaccination or no vaccination is up to an emotional driven decision instead of a factual one, based on research.

“But the doctor told me this. The pediatrician told me that,” etc. There isn’t anyone that wants to tell you not to listen to your doctor, not me, not anyone, but you do not have to take their advice as the golden rule, end all beat all, no possible reason to look elsewhere, or get a second opinion. You have to be as much a part of your health as anyone. So, I encourage second opinions, doing your homework, and getting answers that you truly believe in.

At the end of the day, everyone wants to do what is absolutely best for their children. That I can understand, even if I am not a parent. So, to answer the question, as a non-parent, holistic health physician, and avid researcher, here goes.

In my opinion (see what I did there) I feel like the vaccine schedule is too intense. Too many vaccines at one time. Too many administered at too young of an age. But that is just my opinion, I will accept any criticism for that.

Let’s start talking facts.

Do vaccines work?

You are going to find a plethora of studies that show how vaccines have eradicated some very serious diseases, and at the same time, if you look deeper, you will find that simply natural selection has eradicated these diseases.

You will hear how autism is being expressed in children that get vaccines due to mercury and preservatives in the vaccine. Then you will hear about studies being shown that this is impossible.
It is nearly impossible to find the empirical evidence that you need to make the right decision, right?
Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in Columbus

As an avid researcher, I feel it is important to analyze the integrity of the research itself. Who funded it? Who stands to benefit from the outcomes of the study? Is there any way the data is skewed to ensure such an outcome that is beneficial for those who have funded it and stand to make a profit from it? This is where I find it hard to trust any evidence that is funded by the pharmaceutical industry. They stand to make $$BILLIONS$$ of dollars if the vaccine schedule seems effective. They are directly building a case to sell their products.

Then I look at the research that comes up with the latter of the terms. They show how vaccines are not working as it seems. They show how the decline in the diseases that are ever so boastfully acclaimed by the vaccine producing studies is simply a form of natural selection. So, I have to ask myself, what do these researchers have to gain for this work and information? I struggle to find a monetary gain. I struggle to see a power gain. I also struggle to see any reason for them to write this to falsely hurt the health of the people around them. Let’s face it. A non-biased company is not going to write about how vaccines are unnecessary if they actually are. They have no reason to try and discredit something that will ultimately keep you from contracting a major illness? Right?

So, I continue to look at the big picture. I dig deeper.

I am sure you have seen the epic amount of news articles about whistle blowers from the CDC discussing how they have corruptively hidden evidence of mercury toxicity from vaccines linking to autism. The struggle is finding this research. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT. So, in order to keep writing in evidence based way, I can only write about what I have found.

Have you heard of The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program?

Well it seems in 1988, the vaccine industry was struggling to make enough profit to compensate for the claims of harm done, so they created an excise tax on vaccines that gets paid to the CDC indirectly for these claims.

Since then, that value for the CDC has risen to over $3.4 BILLION. That seems like a conflict of interest to me, but hey, who knows?

So, do vaccines work?

Again, it is difficult to give an empirical answer to that. Studies show they do, studies show they don’t. But what I do know is this. Since the outbreak of measles from Disneyland, it does seem to be alarming that a percentage of those that contracted measles were of the vaccinated population… Yes, some of the spreading of measles has gone to the vaccinated population. So, does the vaccine work, maybe, does it not work, yes it seems so... You are probably not going to hear the exact numbers or percentages of those contracting measles which are vaccinated or not, because simply, the US, CDC, pharmaceutical world doesn’t want you to hear that vaccinated kids can get measles. Hmm.

Let’s move on.  Have you ever heard of Atypical Measles?

To quote Medicinenet.com

“Atypical measles syndrome (AMS): An altered expression of measles, AMS begins suddenly with high fever, headache, cough, and abdominal pain. The rash may appear 1 to 2 days later, often beginning on the limbs. Swelling (edema) of the hands and feet may occur. Pneumonia is common and may persist for 3 months or more.
AMS occurs in persons who were incompletely immunized against measles. This may happen if a person were given the old killed-virus measles vaccine (which does not provide complete immunity and is no longer available); or the person were given attenuated (weakened) live measles vaccine that was, by accident, inactivated during improper storage. Immunization with inactivated measles virus does not prevent measles virus infection. It can, however, sensitize a person so that the expression of the disease is altered, resulting in AMS.
Being atypical, AMS can be confused with other entities including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, meningococcal infection, various types of pneumonia, appendicitis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, etc.”
More alarming, is when you find out that encephalitis is a common symptom of measles and atypical measles, and now there is a dominant link to children with autism and also having encephalitis. Again, no empirical evidence to confirm this finding has anything to do with vaccines.
To clear this up, it seems that the MMR is not going to guarantee you will not contract measles if exposed. If you get the MMR there is a chance you will contract Atypical Measles from the vaccine itself, which can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and that is linked to autism in children. Again, these are just facts from the reading above. I am in no way trying to just attack the MMR vaccine, or measles in this writing, but the current outbreak does bring it to top of mind. The flu vaccine is another dandy, which is also on the schedule for vaccines according to the CDC for children under 1 year old.
Back to the main question at hand. Should I vaccinate my children?
This is an answer that only you can decide. I am unbiased. I can find research that shows how magnificent they are (with a blind eye on whom funded it) and I can find research that shows how devastating they can be.
But what would I do? (This is my opinion, take it or leave it)

As I said, I do not have any children of my own at this time. But, my children will be vaccinated on a
Fibromyalgia treatment, restless leg syndrome treatment, diabetes treatment, how to treat diabetes, how to lose weight, how to treat fibromyalgia, Columbus fibromyalgia, Columbus diabetes treatment, treat inflammation in Columbus, Columbus inflammation clinic, Get healthy in Columbus, Columbus health clinic, Columbus wellness clinic, heartburn treatment in Columbus, dr trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in Columbus, Columbus chiropractic, chiropractic care in Columbus
very different schedule, if any. I will never allow a combined MMR vaccine to be administered, it is just too much. The more research I do, and the more it seems that vaccines are a danged if you don’t, more danged if you do scenario, I would say that I will do the latter. I am not a fan of putting a chemical, dead virus, inoculated pathogen, whatever, into the bloodstream of my future children unless I know that there is a 100% chance of no failure or complications. Considering the CDC has $3.4Billion in a compensation program, I am worried. Instead, I will promote a healthy immune system in my children. Help them build strong immune systems, ready to fight incoming pathogens. I plan to do this by providing healthy foods instead of processed junk. I will be sure they take a probiotic and eat fermented foods like sauerkraut. It is all too often that I hear parents discussing how difficult it is to get their children to eat healthy. This is an epidemic of itself. We will discuss that later in a future blog.

Life, Without a Microwave...

Can you even imagine what it would be like to go into your kitchen not have the ability to cook a lean cuisine in three minutes, or not be able to heat up some left overs in 45 seconds?

Get Healthy With US
I study proper nutrition and healthy meal preparation, and as we all know, microwaves are bad news. They simply heat foods too quickly, destroy the structures of proteins, and leave your food even further depleted of nutrients than they were before. Microwaving your foods in plastic containers can release a number of health altering no-nos in just seconds, but that is not what I am writing about.

I am here to discuss what life is like without a microwave.

During the process of getting your health on track, the primary focus should be to consider what foods you are putting in your body. Secondly, you need to also address the emotional components that go into preparing those foods.

The principle of The New-Start Solution diet plan is eating single ingredient foods.  Going to the meat isle and buying fresh, unfrozen, grass fed beef, or organic chicken. These foods require nothing from a microwave, and this is why they rarely get purchased. Fresh broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, oranges, grapes, onions, or any other produce do not require the use of the microwave, and these foods are passed right by.
Instead, we all tread to the frozen food section and seek out the quick, fast, and in a hurry to prepare meals that can just be popped into a microwave. In just a matter of minutes, dinner is served.

What expense does this really have?

In America, we are living the microwave lifestyle, trying to get as much done in the shortest amount of time. We pass over the processes of enjoying the time we spend on this earth, slowing down our daily process and just doing the things that are vital for our survival. We wake up, pop a toaster strudel in the microwave, cover it with glaze, and then race off to work. For lunch, we seek a fast food restaurant because they can get us a cheeseburger and fries in about 2 minutes. Those foods are microwaved too. We scarf down the delicious treat as fast as possible because lunch hour is actually only 30 minutes in most jobs.

We have learned to budget minimal amounts of time to our most vital task of the day, food, and the microwave is the culprit. OK, I shouldn't only blame the microwave. Since the release of the microwave in the 1970-80s, not completely sure on the exact release date, but since then, many negative changes have been made to the American Lifestyle. From the food pyramid to industrialization of insurance companies, many negative things. But for the sake of this article, we can't focus on changing everything, just one thing at a time.

wellness newstart, newstart, mozingo, mozHow many times have you wanted popcorn, and got the stove fired up? Never, because popping a bag (this side up) in and pushing the popcorn button on the front of the miracle machine is so much more efficient.
Bacon is now precooked and just 1 minute away from the table. Canned vegetables can ready to dine in 5 minutes. Rice cooked in 90 seconds in a bag. Baked potatoes used to take 45 minutes, now 6. Frozen, packaged, pancakes are thawed and cooked in one special place in just seconds.

All of these things are the systematic design of the simpleton, fast-paced, way of life that we have grown accustomed to. The unfortunate part of all of this is:

YOUR HEALTH SUFFERS.

I have set my life up to maximize health and overall wellness by taking my life as far back to the basics as I can. I am in no way shape or form perfect, but I at least am trying. I have officially logged my personal telephone out of social media. I have taken time to restore friendships and conversation back to the basics of true, in person communications, and since January, I have started:

Life, without a Microwave.

Sure, this concept is cumbersome at times. Trying to get a two year old fed before they get upset without using a microwave can have its struggles. Reheating the leftovers from the night before is not as convenient, but I have spent more time connecting to the foods that I prepare for the family so much more. I can appreciate a wholesome cooked meal because I know that I didn’t take the easy way out. You learn so quickly which burner on the flat top stove heats up the fastest. You learn what temperature you need your skillet to be before you put the first dab of pancake batter on there. You fire the crock pot back up and plan a meal in the morning for the evening.

All things considered, life without a microwave has changed my way of thinking even more to the basics. Use the oven, cook bacon, mix pancake batters, and most importantly, connect with the food that you are eating. Food is the one source of life on this planet. Without food, you simply will not be. The health of every cell in your body is in direct relation to the quality of products you put on the end of your fork.

Do the Life, Without a Microwave Challenge.

columbus indiana chiropractor, massage columbus indianaI challenge each of my readers to try this for one week. Just 7 days. All you have to do is unplug your microwave, and let it sit.

It really isn’t hard to warm up leftovers. Just put them into a covered pot and turn the stove on. Sure, it will take 10 minutes, but what does this time matter? Are you really in too big of a hurry to apply 10 more minutes to a meal?

I can guarantee you one thing, if you are under the impression that you cannot live without the use of a microwave, your health is suffering. There are too many small things in life that you are missing, just because you are not taking time to appreciate it.

Do yourself a favor, take 7 days, pull the plug, and see how your life changes.

CVS, You Tried, You Failed.

I heard the breaking new this morning and started laughing.

CVS is going to stop selling tobacco products.

I guess I am missing the point.

Are the CVS stores trying to minimize its sales of poison?

Are they not interested in selling something that is designed to destroy your health?

As soon as I got to my office, I started to do some research on the matter, and it again, makes me laugh.

CEO Larry Merlo noted that chronic conditions are made worse by smoking.
‘‘We've come to the conclusion that cigarettes have no place in a setting where health care is being delivered,’’ he said

So, I assume that Larry seems to think that health care means pharmaceutical medications?

Lets start with the facts. The CDC has examined the death toll of tobacco use and has come up with a wild number of about 480,000 deaths a year are attributed to the use of tobacco.

Of these 480,000 deaths, the breakdown of causes seem to be a bit disorganized as to how they link them to smoking of cigarettes. We all know that smoking cigarettes is linked to lung cancer. This makes sense. Cancer is related to stress on a function of the body, and smoking puts stress on the lungs causing the cells to mutate and become cancerous.

We have all seen pictures of what lungs look like in a smoker instead of a non smoker.

We all know the risks of smoking and how harmful it is for the body.

Anyone that smokes cigarettes is not sold something that is supposed to benefit their health. Smokers make a conscious decision to light up and harm their health.

The second leading killer due to cigarette smoking is heart disease?

I have done extensive research on the inflammatory condition called heart disease.

According to The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, "Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. When combined with other risk factors—such as unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and overweight or obesity—smoking further raises the risk of heart disease."

So, to be clear, is smoking the risk factor, or does smoking raise the risk of. I am not sure, but I do know this, You will not develop heart disease unless you eat more sugar than you are supposed to. Arteriosclerosis is caused by inflammation in the arteries. Sugar is the cause of elevated LDL cholesterol, the cause of increased insulin in the blood, and increased fat tissue in the body.

What is the major risk factor for heart disease?

The VAST MAJORITY of HEART DISEASE PATIENTS are OVERWEIGHT.

Some underweight people do get heart disease. They could suffer from idiopathic elevated cholesterol. They can suffer from undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes.

The other factor is that ALL diabetic patients that go through the health care system, and take the "medications" for Type 2 Diabetes will develop and die from heart disease. That is a fact.

What causes people to be overweight?

HMMM, maybe CVS should rethink the long isle of candy, sugary treats, soda, potato chips, and alcohol.

The real cause of heart disease lays within our diet and lifestyle, maybe CVS should think about changing into a Whole Food Store? Instead of a great place to get discount candy after Halloween or any other holiday?

The real story here, is that smoking is bad. Everyone knows that. No one has ever tried to sell someone a cigarette with the explanation that it will help your health.

So, CVS is stopping selling these products because it is known that they do not help your health, and a place that is associated with the the health care system does not want to promote a product that hijacks your health?

Again, CVS sees that assisting the medical system in passing or dealing their drugs to a consumer that have been prescribed by a "health" care professional is what they should be doing to promote "health."

What are the facts within the heath care system?

I have some alarming statistics that will help you understand my confusion as to why CVS thinks that stopping selling a product that everyone knows is bad for your health and continues to sell a product that is praised as the only way to better your health. The problem is, the medications your buy from CVS have minimal research, and typically, botched research to prove that it will help you at all.

These stats are not the most current, because the FDA and the Pharmaceutical industry realized how bad they are for business. This is what our health care system is all about, right? Business?

  • In an average year, 1.6 million people are hospitalized due to side effects of prescription drugs, and 160,000 will die. (1992)
  • In America, we consume about 15 tons of aspirin a day, or 19 billion tablets per year. Aspirin is considered harmless, right?
    • A single aspirin will be responsible for 1500-2000 deaths/years
    • leading cause of kidney disease
    • Create ulcers, headaches, and Reye's Syndrome.
  • 61,000 Americans will suffer from prescription drug induced Parkinson's Disease a year.
  • Americans over the age of 60, over 1 million will have adverse reactions to medications.
    • 243,000 will be hospitalized
    • 163,000 will suffer from permanent memory loss
  • 32,000 elderly Americans will suffer from hip fractures due to drug induced falls.
    • 1500 will die.
  • 196,000 Americans will die from PROPERLY PRESCRIBED DRUGS.
  • Health Care costs have reached $15 Trillion dollars and no help is in sight.
  • Drug mishaps cost Americans about $182 million dollars a year, kill as many as 198,000, hospitalize 8.8 million and account for over 25% of all hospital admissions.
Do I even need to discuss VIOXX? It was a medication that was not researched with long term studies to decide its side effects and it resulted in 500,000 deaths. Half a million deaths occurred due to this medically prescribed medication. Health Care?

I guess I have a different definition of "health" care than that of CVS and the medical industry.

I am congratulating CVS on this change. Not promoting a poison is a positive advance in our health status in America. I am just afraid they are trying to put out the raging forest fire with canteens, while their biggest money making industry are fueling it with gasoline.

Wait, did CVS forget that they sell alcohol? Doesn't it seem a little hypocritical to stop selling cigarettes but continue to sell a full shelf of alcohol products?

So, maybe this is all business?

Cigarette sales being stopped will cost CVS $2 billion dollars this year. They represent only 4% of total tobacco sales in the country.

Will this make any real impact on decreasing the amount of smokers? I don't think so. The vast majority of patrons in any pharmacy are those of the elderly population, considering the average elderly person takes 15 different prescriptions a day.

What are the amount of cigarettes being smoked by this population?

FIGURE 1. Percentage of adults aged ≥18 years who were current smokers,* by age group — National Health Interview Survey, United States, 2005–2011
smoking levels, who smokes, healthcare in columbus

As you can see. Only 7.5% of the elderly population smoke. More importantly, the total smokers in America are declining.

Smoking as a whole is declining, yet health care costs continue to rise?

chiropractor in columbus, healthcare in columbus,

Again, CVS, stop trying to put a forest fire out with a canteen. You have to keep the $50 billion dollars in advertising from big pharma from happening to make any impact on our health.

Why is it so hard to say goodbye?

Saying goodbye to something or someone you depend on for security, look to for entertainment, or even rely on to cheer you up when you are down is not an easy task. Every relationship we have with things ranging from cars to phones to family, has its blessings and hardships. There is no relationship that doesn't put its stress on you in demand for comfort and compassion of their problems. This stress can come in the form of giving a shoulder to cry on to getting your car a new air filter or oil change.

The relationship that we have created with social networking is different.

I do not think we are dependent on our relationship with Facebook like we are dependent on our mothers, brothers, or automobiles. We do not need these social network relationships to get through our daily task or make ends meet.

We are addicted to their interaction.

We are addicted to the irrelevant posts, pictures, and videos that entertain us.

trent mozingo, chiropractor columbus
This addiction is no different than the addiction to cigarettes or alcohol. We all know that nicotine is dangerous, and will only cause us harm in the long run, but yet the addiction remains. You forget about the negative effects of cigarettes because you are only fixated on the benefit. The relaxation of smoking, the oral fixation of smoking, the activity that gives you something to do on you 15 minute break from work. Not a single person is unaware of the negative effects of alcohol on the body. Everyone that drinks knows that there are no health benefits to alcohol, only liver damage, but yet, they continue to drink just to get the buzz, or numb the mind of the situations around them.

Just like all addictions, the addiction to social networks has minimal benefit to us in a societal setting. We are addicted to the news feed about what everyone that we know, and even some people that we don't, are doing. We have become satisfied and feel superior when someone we know are losing their hair, or their cars are not as nice, or are participating in activities that we feel like we are "above". All of this social media information may seem like it gives you a high similar to alcohol, but we have neglected to analyze the negative effects of this constant contact has on the stress levels or adrenal function in the body.

The adrenal gland produces a hormone called Cortisol in response to stress. Stress can come in three forms, emotional, physical or chemical. The most crucial to the adrenal gland, and Cortisol levels is emotional stress.. If you are in constant contact, and you find your mood or demeanor affected by the drama that you read on social networks, you should be careful. Adrenal Fatigue is the primary step in developing thyroid dysfunction, hormone imbalances, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Addictions are hard to break. You develop neural pathways in the brain that only the thing you are addicted to can satisfy. Your body can be addicted to emotional stress and seek it to satisfy your desire to feel superior. The real time effects of using social media to make you feel better about yourself will never leave you in a better place at the end of the day, just like a White Russian will not help your health at the end of the day.

Do not get me wrong, there are some healthy and beneficial things that can come from social media interactions. A Screwdriver mix drink has orange juice in it, right? You just need to figure out if you are at a level of unhealthy addiction to it.

If you find your mood change when you read the posts. If you find yourself losing touch of the personal interactions around you because you are plugged in. If you notice that most of your conversations are digital, it could be time to take a step back.

Using social media can be healthy, but you need to be sure you don't get to a point of unhealthy addiction. Make sure you spend more time each day with one on one interactions instead of digital interactions.

The feeling of freedom
I have been unplugged for almost a week. This is an image of my phone disconnecting from Facebook. Ironically, I still receive emails from Facebook that let me know how many friend requests I have, how many notifications, or even that someone poked me since I last logged in. (I didn't know you could still poke) Facebook is trying to keep me connected, which is just another reason that disconnecting is just so difficult.

Some say that considering I read this email means I am still connected, and in some ways I agree. But the truest feeling of freedom is being able to know that I have friend requests, I have been poked, I have 24 new messages, and I really don't care who they are from, or what they say. The people that truly want to talk to me still do, they just cannot use social media to do so. A friend request on Facebook does not mean I gained a new friend to me, it means someone is interested in seeing what I am doing or trying to show me what they are doing without making the effort to actually see me.

I have constantly told myself that I need Facebook for my business.

To some extent, this is true. It is a great place to market the great results we get a New-Start Health Center. This is the hardest part of disconnecting. I know there are ways to keep a business account active without logging into my personal account, but I haven't figured it out yet.

For the last week, I have thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of not knowing what everyone is up to, what they like, or where they are checked in. It is the truest form of "Ignorance is Bliss!"

It's Time for Me to Pull the Plug, and Say Goodbye...

I have grown up in the age of the development of constant contact and a world where no conversation can die. No matter how bad it wants you to let it go, how bad it wants to rest in a place more peaceful. Instead, it goes on, tied to a machine with any piece of life pumped into it.  Meaningless ongoing conversations have so many mediums to be transmitted that we never really take a chance to pull the plug and let them die.
I feel like over the last 15 years I have watched something so genuine and healthy turn into a sad, unhealthy, lifeless form that is plugged into every machine, and even wirelessly, unable to die.

Conversations used to be genuine, and real. When I had something to ask my brother, I would wait for him to get home and we would talk about it. If I had not talked to my grandmother for a while, I would make an effort to drive to her house, eat her delicious cooking, and have a real conversation about life. After I spent the afternoon catching up on all of the family gossip (because grandma knows all) I would say goodbye, and go home. The conversation would have met its maker, and it would die. It did not die in vain, it just past on, and went to where conversations are supposed to go, memories.

I remember when I was in middle school, and the internet went into every home. This was an amazing breakthrough. After you got your computer hooked to the phone line and waited for it to dial up. You watched it dial, heard the crazy fax machine like sounds. Finally, after about 5 minutes of getting online and your homepage loading, it was time to chat. It all started with emails. You could send a personal message to someone and they could receive it anytime anywhere, as long as they were tied to a computer and phone line. ICQ was the first instant messenger that was popular in my area and then went straight into a new and improved Microsoft Instant Messenger. I am sure you all remember the green and blue head and body icons that came along with it.

So, that’s how it started, you got yourself a new cool “Hotmail” account and you were ready to chat.  If you were really cool, and had expensive internet, you could get an AOL account. (I heard it was better, but couldn’t get to that level)

My first phone was a Motorola flip phone. It had analog signal, and as long as you were in a good place for signal, and you had the antenna pulled out, it was capable of making phone calls. The idea that I could call anyone anywhere was wonderful at the time, but it is just another poison for the already dying conversation.
In my undergraduate years, I finally got to the next level of phones, color screen and even a camera.  During this time, a new concept had hit the heart of the genuine conversation, Texting. I fought and fought about how dumb it would be to type out a message. All I could think about is how much work that is, and I made the decision, I will just call.

People started texting me, and I realized it was just like email, I could send a personal message to anyone I want, from anywhere I want, and they can get back to me when they get the chance. I don’t have to stop what I am doing for this conversation, I can continue on my day, and have a conversation without even putting effort in.  Text messages are one of the biggest culprits for this downfall of the genuine conversation. Conversation had completely lost its mannerisms. There is no way to judge the emotion in a text conversation, everything gets taken out of context, and you are just left wondering if you had a good conversation, or if that smiley face was sarcastic. We lost the ability to spell correctly, enunciate, or even be honest if we thought something was funny. During genuine conversation, if something is funny, we laugh… LOL, LMFAO, HAHA, HEHE, TTYL, BRB, ILY, IDK, WTF. What a joke… This conversation deserves to die, let it.

During my junior year at Purdue, I was introduced to next great thing… FACEBOOK. How great was this breakthrough. I could be friends with people I don’t even know, try to generate a BS conversation with them, and even act interested.

I could put on there if I was interested in a relationship, and if I found a girl I thought was attractive, I could poke her. Maybe she will poke back. She didn’t poke back. What does this mean? Does she not think I am pretty? Oh I might not be pretty. Let me find out real quick. So I post a selfie (I took 5 or 6 and got the best one). AHHHH. YESSSSS. 34 likes and 14 people told me “great pic.”

This isn’t real Life.

This is us holding onto a dead conversation, hoping to find some support from people we don’t genuinely want to talk to.

Since then, there have many so many new social media sites that only let you post pictures or you have to live your life in 140 characters or less, and all you care about is having more followers than people you are following. That is real satisfaction, Right?

Even better news, about six and a half years ago, the latest and greatest breakthrough for killing all genuine conversations became real. The first generation IPhone. This put all of you mediums to constant contact from text, to Facebook, to Instagram, (which works well because you can just snap a new picture with your phone and post immediately) in the palm of your hand. You can make these lifeless conversations go on and on, anywhere you want and never let them die.

Over the last 15 years I have seen the development of Email, Instant Messenger, Cell Phones, Text Messaging, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, and any amount of other social media. And above all, I have seen the slow downfall of genuine conversation to a lifeless, heartless, emotionless, form of interaction that is only holding on by a thread. We never let them just pass away and move on to MEMORIES.

I am going to make a movement to Pull the Plug, Disconnect a Dying Conversation, and let myself cherish the memory of a conversation.

I am going to lock my Social Media accounts, and have someone I care about change the password. I am going to start with one month and see how much I miss the social world.

I want to rejuvenate the life of the Genuine Conversation. I want to have face to face conversations and real phone calls about things that matter. I want to go see my nieces, nephews, and not rely on pictures online to watch these kids grow.  I want to genuinely become a part of someone’s life, not just “Facebook Official.”
I
have spent 15 years, tumbling down the path to lifeless conversations. I am going to pull the plug, and say goodbye to the conversations that have no meaning, no emotion, no life.

Goodbye for now Facebook and text messages, I am moving on.

Statins, what are the side effects?

In the previous blog, you can read all about cholesterol and its function in the body. The most important factor to take from the blog is that our cholesterol levels are produced by the liver, and they are only produced in response to a stimulus. For those who suffer from elevated cholesterol levels, especially elevated LDL levels, you really need to focus on your diet, because LDL's are the livers response to excess inflammation in the blood. If you use a statin drug to take away your LDLs, instead of focusing on the diet changes that are needed, you will have no organic response to fight the inflammation in the blood, and Diabetes is inevitable.

Read this blog to dive farther into your knowledge of health, and learn how The New-Start Solution will get you back on the health track you desire.

As I stated before, all cholesterol is produced in the liver. Below is a diagram of how the sequence of events takes place for the production of cholesterol.

As you can see, the big black line that has (STATINS) beside it is where statin drugs come in to inhibit the function of HMG-CoA reductase.

Blocking the function of HMG-CoA reductase inhibits the liver from continuing the step of turning HMG-CoA into Mevalonate.

When this very important step along this pathway is stopped, you can see what fails to be produced, Ubiquinone, Cholesterol, and Dclichol.

I have spent a lot of time in the last blog talking about cholesterol and why its produced, but there is one other very important factor that I am going to discuss today.

What is Ubiquinone????

You might have heard of a supplement out that is called CoQ10. Well that is the usable form of Ubiquinone in the body.

Would you be concerned if I told you that there is almost no way to produce adequate amounts of energy for our cells if you do not produce adequate Ubiquinone?

ITS TRUE. HERE IS WHY....

First, lets dive a little deeper into why the body needs Ubiquinone or CoQ10.

I often discuss how we need to properly fuel our body with the fuel that it needs to promote health and prevent illness. Well that fuel comes in three major forms, called Macronutrients. These macronutrients are based upon 3 groups, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Each of these three macros have a basic function to fuel the body. Proteins are blocks of amino acids that are broken down and utilized throughout the body in basically ever function from muscle building, to RNA synthesis. Fats are different, they are utilized as the building blocks of cholesterol, and they help restore neurological function and provide lubrication for our joints in the body.

Carbohydrates are the most common macronutrient that you hear about. There are high carb diets, low carb diets, etc. But what are carbs exactly?

For the most part, carbohydrates are sugar. Sugar is the fuel for energy in the body. I am not going to go into the chemical compound of sugar or be technical about where the carbs we eat should come from. I am just going to discuss one derivative that comes from broken down carbohydrates.

I am in no way saying you should eat endless amounts of sugar because carbohydrates are the energy that our body needs. Vegetables are carbohydrates that we need to fuel the body not a Snickers Bar.

COFFEE, or CAFFEINE is not energy. No matter how much you think you cannot wake up or get through the day without coffee, you are wrong. Caffeine is a stimulant, that makes your body think it has energy and you are only further depriving your body of the energy that is demands.

So, lets talk about how carbohydrates become usable energy in the body.

Bear with me here, this is going to get a little boring, but I promise I will get back to the point of Ubiquinone eventually.

Carbohydrates are sugar, and the most common usable form of sugar in the body is Glucose. I am sure you have heard of this compound. You might have even had a Glucose Tolerance Test before.

Glucose is the form of sugar that is readily usable in the body for energy. The real point of what I am about to say is this. Glucose, Sugar, Caffeine, Protein, Fat, and all other things we eat are not a usable form of energy in the human body. Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is the main thing that is really "energy" in the body. ATP is generated from Glucose, and here is how.

After we eat and digestion takes place to break down the carbs, proteins, and fats, the end result of our food either ends up in our blood stream or as poop.

When a carbohydrate is broken into glucose and your brain is telling your liver that you need some energy to be produced from this meal, the glucose enters the process called Glycolysis.

I am not going to bore you with the entire glycolysis process so here is a picture.

As you can clearly see, the glucose enters the pathway and produces some energy for the body:
  • 2 ATP
  • 2 NADH+
  • 2 Pyruvate.
This is just the start of the metabolic pathway, and to be completely honest, the two ATP produced doesn't mean too much. Our major energy producer is still to come.

So what happens next?

Well the two ATP can be used in the body wherever it need, the NADH+ are put on the back burner for future use, which you will find out shortly, and the two pyruvate compounds go on to enter the Krebs Cycle. (do you remember me talking about the Krebs Cycle in the fibromyalgia blog?)

Again, I won't bore you with the pathway of the Krebs Cycle, so here is a picture.

chiropractor in columbus

As you can clearly see, each of the two pyruvate gets into the Krebs Cycle and produces:
  • 2 ATP
  • 2 FADH2
  • 6 NADH+
Again, these ATP are free to be utilized anywhere in the body and all of the NADH+ and FADH2 are sent to the next and most important pathway for energy production or cell respiration. These compounds enter the Electron Transport Chain (ETC).

Here in the ETC is where the vast majority of you energy is produced. Out of the 30-32 ATP that is produced from each glucose molecule, 24-26 are produced by the ETC.

You are probably started to wonder, why in the world is Dr. Moz still talking about ATP and glucose and endless metabolic pathways. Well here is the kicker, Statin drugs are dangerous because they stop the production of Ubiquinone. Ubiquinone is utilized in the body as CoQ10 and CoQ10 is a vital instrument in the ETC. Considering the ETC produces 80% of our cells' usable energy, I think it is important to discuss it.

Here is the ETC pathway.

chiropractor in columbus

As you can see in this diagram, all of the NADH+ and FADH2 are being utilized through an oxidation/reduction reaction (requires vitamins B2 & B3) to produce ATP across the membrane of the mitochondria. And when each of these molecules are broken down, Ubiquinone, or CoQ10 is utilized to transport the hydrogen ion across the membrane.

So what happens with you do block the body from producing Ubiquinone with a common Statin Medication? You stop the production of ATP. You inhibit your body from carrying out its daily routine.

Are There Side Effects of Statin Drugs?

Most people who take statin drugs tolerate them very well. But some people experience side effects.
The most common statin side effects include:
  • Headache
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Flushing of the skin
  • Muscle aches, tenderness, or weakness (myalgia)
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Abdominal cramping and/or pain
  • Bloating and/or gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Rash
All of these side effects have to do with poor cell activity and decreased overall energy levels. Think about this when your doctor tries to prescribe you a statin medication.

ADHD, ADD? Overdiagnosed, Overmedicated...

What is causing the rise in ADHD, ADD, and all other psychological imbalances in the youth?

It is not news that more and more of children and teens are being diagnosed with the condition called Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The prevalence is rising in a dramatic rate, but what else is rising at the same rate? The answer is Sugar intake.  Is there a correlation?

I have seen patients with this condition ADHD, and ironically, there is almost always a correlation to these children also having a food allergy, or multiple food allergies. But why, what is the connection between hyperactivity and food allergies?

First, it is important to understand that if you have been in contact with an ADHD child, and they had no food allergies, unfortunately, most food allergies go undiagnosed. The medical profession does not seek this connection. Typically, food allergies are diagnosed prior to the diagnosis of ADHD, but at soon as ADHD is found, no course of action is taken for analyzing the digestive tract. So, this leads me to the true root of the problem in any accurately diagnosed hyperactive child.

I say “accurately diagnosed” because there are some alarming incentives for diagnosing these conditions. For example, did you know that school systems get a $400 incentive a year for each student that is diagnosed? Most schools have developed an interactive online learning style. Does this take into account the three different styles of learners? Audio and Kinetic learners do not benefit from this teaching style, only visual. It is impossible to keep a child’s attention if you are not interacting to them in a manner that suits their personality type. But this is not a paper discussing the proper diagnosis of ADHD, this blog set to address the cause of true ADHD, ADD, etc.

I often blog about the importance of the digestive system and its role in health in the body. To say the digestive system has just a role in health is almost misleading, it is the most important function in the body. Proper digestion allows the body to uptake every vital nutrient that gives the body its life force. I get it, you are wondering what food allergies and ADHD have to do with the health of the digestive system, and also, how does sugar affect any of it?

Let’s start from the beginning.  Can you tell me what foods these labels belong to?

This is the ingredient list of the major producers of infant formula. Can you see a common MAIN ingredient? Corn Syrup, Sugar. In America, it has become evident that breast feeding is a thing of the past. And yes, I understand that I am a male, I do not have any understanding of the woes of this form of feeding. But, it is important to address that breast feeding is the primitive and natural form of feeding for an infant. The milk from a mother is the primary source of building the immune system of a baby. It is also chocked full of vital nutrients in a raw, bio-available form that are needed to properly develop the digestive tract of an infant. But not to soap box about nursing, I am just trying to put into perspective the importance of building a beneficial digestive system in infants.

So, as you can see, the primary source of calories in the infant formula is derived from sugar substances. What sugar does to the digestive system is unparalleled in a negative way. Sugar is linked to decreasing the acid levels in the stomach and decreases the stomach’s ability to properly denature and break down the food that is consumed. Have you noticed that the amount of cases of chronic spit ups, or acid reflux in infants?

When the food enters the stomach and the pH is in an alkaline state, the food doesn’t get properly digested, and the small intestine does not like foods that are undigested. There are only two ways for food to leave the stomach, down the tract into the small intestine, or up through the esophagus. So, to be redundant, when we eat foods that are loaded with sugar, they cannot be properly digested due to low acid levels, and then the food either enters the small intestine undigested, or it is spit back up like in acid reflux. Unfortunately, the common medical model treatment plan for acid reflux is prescription Zantac, or other antacid medications. These medications just further lower the acid levels in the stomach, furthering the digestive problems. Back to the point, we are going to discuss what happens when food enters the small intestine undigested.

Here is a brief explanation of food allergies

Some foods (milk, gluten, eggs, etc.) that require a very acidic stomach to digest also require specific digestive enzymes to further their proper denaturing and assimilation into the blood stream. If these two factors are not in place, or the digestive health of a person is not adequate those foods can be assimilated, or taken into the blood stream undigested. When an undigested food enters the blood stream, the body sees this as a foreign object, and the natural process is for the blood system to build antibodies against these particles, and this is the start of food allergies.

Ok, back to the point

Sugar is one of the primary causes of food allergies due to its ability to lower the stomach’s acid levels, but it also has one other problem. It changes the normal flora in the large intestine. Normal flora is the bacteria that must be in the large intestine to finish the digestion of foods, and also programs the body’s immune system. There are many forms of “bad” opportunistic bacteria that can combat the good bacteria and the main source of fuel or food for these “bad” bacteria is sugar. When these “bad” bacteria start to win the battle with the normal flora, and become more prevalent in the large intestine, they can program your cravings. Any organism is trained to crave the fuel that makes them stronger, and the “bad” bacteria are trained to create a craving for sugar. Again, to recap. Sugar is the cause of proliferation of “bad” bacteria in the large intestine, and the “bad” bacteria also create a craving for sugar.

In Short, We start each child off with an infant formula that the main ingredient is sugar, starting this cascade of events.

Back to ADHD, ADD, and other psychological imbalances

Have you ever seen a child on Mountain Dew or red bull?

Sugar is the cause of hyperactivity, sugar is the cause of lack of attention, and sugar is the cause of most digestive tract conditions. But soft drinks are not the only place to find high levels of sugar. Look at the main ingredient in most of the processed foods you are eating, ketchup, salad dressing, and even bread/pasta.

The plan.

Restoring the most important function of the human body is the primary plan. This starts with utilizing enzymes that will restore the acid levels in the stomach, boosting the normal flora levels in the large intestine, and minimizing sugar intake.

The New-Start Solution is a specific diet that is designed to do just that.

You can follow down two pathways, the medical model for ADHD with consists of nervous system inhibiting medications that have no future of treating the cause of the hyperactivity, or you can start with the restoration of the body’s ability to digest the natural substances that relaxes the nervous system, allowing the body to rest.

Dr Mozingo's Food For Thought. Lose fat, build muscle

The New-Start Solution | Muscle and Strength

Nutrition | Lose Fat, Build Muscle
This phase is designed to lean out the diet, and start the body in muscle building mode. The food we eat is fuel for the body and muscles, and when you are starting a new weight training regimen, it is important to properly fuel the body, or you will suffer from decreased gains, and muscle fatigue.  This is not an easy program to follow exactly, but try to stay as true to it as you can.

Should I count calories?
Yes, when someone is trying to alter their physique, or build muscle, it is important to count calories to ensure they are getting enough. Yes, I said to ensure they are getting enough calories. Under eating could result in muscle fatigue, and also turn on specific enzymes that promote fat storage instead of muscle building. On average, we need about 15-18 calories per pound of body weight each day to maintain muscle tone, and to build muscle, it needs to go up to 18-20.  This being said, it is more important to balance where your calories are coming from than just the total number of calories being taken in.

Is protein important?
Muscles are made of protein, so in order to build bigger, stronger muscles you have to fuel them with their building blocks, like proteins. Several studies have shown that consuming 30-40% of total calories from protein sources on train days show a dramatic increase in muscle gains. This translates into 1 ½ - 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. The New-Start Solution program starts on the lower end of that, requiring 1 ½ grams of protein per pound of body weight. Protein sources should vary as well, eggs for example have about 8-12 grams of protein each, and an 8 ounce sirloin steak has about 55 grams of protein. So to be clear, it is important to consume 1 ½ have grams of protein per pound of body weight on train days (225 grams for 150lb person) and 1 gram on rest days.

Are carbohydrates important?
Carbohydrates act as the body’s energy, allowing for muscle contraction and also vital for glycogen storage. Glycogen is what stays in the muscle and pulls water into them making them fuller and allowing a stretch of the muscle fibers. When the muscle fibers stretch, it stimulates protein synthesis, building bigger stronger muscles. In the beginning, most people have plenty of store glycogen, so in Phase 1 The New-Start Solution suggests an intake of 1 gram of carbohydrates per pound of body weight on train days, and ½ grams per day on rest days.

Are fats important?
Fats are critical in the building block of testosterone and all other androgen hormones. Testosterone is a vital part of muscle building so eating adequate amounts of fat will boost testosterone levels. Omega-3 fats are an essential part of joint lubrication and nerve conduction. These fats are found in fatty fish and eggs. The New-Start Solution puts an emphasis on the importance of supplementing with ORGANIC Omega-3 oil and also consuming about ½ of your body weight in grams of fat/day. These intakes should be 1/3 saturated, 1/3 monounssaturated and 1/3 polyunsaturated fats.  Most meat products have this balance.

Is there any other tips for better gains?
  1. Eat frequently, 3-4 meals a day, with snacks in between is adequate.
  2. Always eat protein for breakfast
  3. Eat eggs. 3 eggs a day has been proven to promote bigger gains.
  4. Eat casein protein before bed. This allow for muscle building during the long hours of sleep.
  5. Eat your veggies. The micronutrients found in vegetables will fuel the body on a cellular level.

Diet plan or Gym?… Health, it’s what you eat

It’s 2013, and we all have to make that big decision, do we want to be healthier than we were in 2012, or not?

New Year has come and passed, and most of us have made a resolution to get healthy, so we sign up at the local gym, go to GNC and get the latest and greatest fat loss miracle, and get started. It is not news that exercise is a vital part of becoming a healthier person, but we often look over the fact that it only accounts for about 20% of weight loss and health. The vast majority of our health is based on what is at the end of our fork. This is why most resolutions fail. This is why we never see the results we desire from the hard work at the gym. Each time you go to the gym you burn about 200-300 calories.

This is a good start, but if you eat one cheeseburger, drink one fountain drink, or eat one Snickers bar, you are going to negate every bit of that workout. I am guilty of this just as much as anyone is, if I go to the gym and get a good set in, I feel like I am allowed to reward myself with something. That reward is always a food that will negate the great benefits I just got at the gym, and it is back to square one the next day.

A wash on the day for health is better than the average American, because statistically the majority of Americans gain weight every single day, so if you are able to maintain a weight and not gain you are actually showing benefits. But this is not was we want, is it? We want to lose a ton of weight in a hurry. We want a six pack by spring.

The hardest part of my position is to try to put rational goals in place for each patient. Weight loss greater than 3 lbs per week is too much and will shock the body and cause health damage. So, it is important to be patient and set a goal of about 10 lbs per month. Eating a reduced calorie diet is effective, but it is important to take some focus away from just calorie in calorie out and remember that without adequate levels of vital nutrients, the body will not allow you to lose weight.

Here are some quick tips on how to maximize your weight loss results:
  1. Do not drink your calories
  2. Avoid all grains
  3. Make vegetables your primary food
  4. Eat only foods with ONE ingredient
  5. Avoid processed food
Remember…

If you live the common American lifestyle, and eat the Standard American Diet (SAD), chances are, your health will worsen this year, just as it did last year and the year before that. We are living in a way that has led to a decline in our health and an incline in our waist line. The New-Start Solution is a plan that will work very effectively to restore your health and help you reach your New Year’s goal.

Food for health and wellness, New-Start Health Center

Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) Silent killer of American health

At New-Start Health Center, we are constantly doing research to help ensure each of our patients that true health is possible. As a chiropractor in Columbus, Indiana, I work hard to make sure everyone knows the many safe and natural ways to improve their health, and prevent disease. Today, we are discussing the new rumbling topic of GMOs.

For decades we have heard over and over again that high fructose corn syrup is just like sugar. We have heard that soy products are healthier than meat products. We constantly hear that Angus beef is what we are getting at the local fast food joint.  Recent studies have been leaked that organic vegetables are not better for you than non-organic.  What is the common denominator in all of this skewed and inaccurate information? The answer is GMOs. Well not GMOs, they don’t speak, but the producers of the seeds, fertilizers, and herbicides for these GMO products. But How?

Monsanto is the dominate advocate for the production of genetically modified organisms, simply because they are responsible for their production and their immense profits. Every time a food scientist does research of the negative effects that GMO products has on our health, they are hushed, sued, or demonized. Monsanto is in control of 90% of the agricultural seeds that are planted in American soil, and any negative research would hurt their profits, so they simply do not allow it to be produced. They are major lobbyist in our government, the FDA, and the USDA, controlling each medium for us to hear the truth. As citizens of America, land of the free, we have a right to know how dangerous GMO products are, and currently there are petitions, and bills being passed on a state government level that requires each food manufacturer to label if a GMO product is being used.  Start today, boycott these dangerous products, buy local, non-GMO products.

You might be wondering, what is a GMO? Genetically modified organisms are a product of a laboratory that takes the genetic makeup of a certain food, or plant seed, and alter it. Corn for example, they have modified the genes of corn to bear a pesticide, so when a bug starts to attack the corn seed, it will actually die. This is the same corn that is used to produce corn meal, corn syrup, and feed for animals. Round-up Ready soybeans are products that have a herbicide resistant gene implanted in it, and if Round-up Herbicide is sprayed, it will kill all of the vegetation except the soybeans that bear this genetic mutation.  THIS IS DANGEROUS STUFF. This is dangerous for our digestive system, our immune system, and our overall health.

A mixture of corn and soybeans ground together is the most common form of feed for every animal we eat in America. Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, buffalo, and even fish are a few very common ingested meats that we as Americans consume on a regular basis. Every single one of those animals that are not marked as “organic” or “grass-fed” are most likely eating Genetically Modified Organism feed. This means our beef, poultry, pork, eggs, dairy, etc, are all products that bear the detrimental effects of GMO food. In turn, all of us that eat those products are hurting our health, increasing health care costs, and increasing pharmaceutical sales.

The agriculture and pharmaceutical business are both major factors in our health. It is important to see that they really do not have our health in their best interest. They are a business, and they are in the market to sell food and drugs at a profit. Do not let these major businesses pull wool over your eyes. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH! Start by eating the right foods, and fuel your body with the nutrients it needs. This is the start to disease prevention.

Do yourself a favor, read our food guide. This is a very effective guide to teach you have to shop and avoid GMO products. It has a list of food manufacturers that will not use GMO products, so start there. Start with buying from a company that cares about your food and your health. How a Chiropractor in Columbus can help

Sympathetic Facilitation (Fixable with chiropractic care)

Each function of the human body is controlled and mediated by the activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS consists of two major players, the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).

The SNS and PNS are inhibitory to each other, meaning when one is excited, or turned on, the other must be inhibited, or turned off. As you can see in the picture below, each system’s action contradicts the other’s function. The SNS is responsible for the body’s flight or fight response to a stress, and the PNS is responsible for digestive function in a relaxed state as well as the maintenance of the body at rest.

When the SNS is activated, the digestive functions of the body are inhibited. When you respond to a fight or flight scenario, it is important to prioritize the blood flow of the body; shunting it from the digestive system and using it to allow maximum muscle function and mental clarity to protect the body.

This is a part of Sympathetic Facilitation.

Diagnosis, The most important factor in health care

New-Start Health Center is changing the way we look at health in America.

Why is our health care system failing to improve the health of America? Why is the obesity rate climbing? Why are the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and all other inflammatory diseases climbing? The answer to the questions is this, misdiagnosing the true cause of each condition.  We MUST CHANGE  the way our health care system looks at the body, the way it diagnoses a condition, and the way it looks at treating a disease.

It is not the doctor’s fault. Each doctor is trained to treat each condition with a certain protocol and they are just doing their job. Antacids for heartburn, antibiotics for sore throat, tranquilizers for restlessness, statin drugs for high cholesterol, etc. are very common protocols. These therapies are effective at treating the symptoms of a bodily dysfunction, but they are missing the big picture, treat the dysfunction, not the symptoms. The main problem with treating symptoms is that it can lead to a domino effect. One medication could have a side effect, and without noticing the doctor will most likely prescribe another medication to treat the side effect caused by the first medication.

Instead of this therapy, the health professional needs to realize that the human body is just a machine. Each engine needs a few basic things to run; air, fuel, and electricity. The human body is the same, we need food for fuel, air to breath, and our nervous system is an electrical component that makes it all work. To further critique this, think about putting watered down gasoline in your car, or putting diesel fuel in a gasoline engine. What would happen? The engine might run, but it will be running sluggish, rough, and unable to perform the duties that we rely on. The human body is the same, if we put unhealthy fuel into our body, the machine will not function properly.

While studying pathology in school, I realized that I started diagnosing as a child. Growing up on a farm allowed my brothers and me to get our hands on many different types of machinery.  It was important to realize each component and function of each machine. Each time we noticed some dysfunction in a machine, (tractor running rough, tillage equipment leaving rough segments in the soil) we had to diagnose what was actually going wrong with the machine. The approach I was taught was to first know what parts made up the machine, what each part’s function was, and most importantly, know what symptom the machine would experience if that part was faulty.  Once you understand symptomology, it is important that you are not trying to just fix the symptom, but you are actually trying to alleviate the symptom by fixing the component causing it.  When you do this, you will see that the expense of the fix is much less, because you are only the one part that you need.

To translate this back to health care is simple. As a health care provider, it is essential to know the many different organs and functions of the human body. It’s important to know the complex interactions between vitamins, minerals, and hormones of the body. And again, the most important information to know is the symptoms that the body produces to let you know something has gone awry.  To properly diagnose a condition, we must read to symptoms, and link them to the true organic cause. If we, as a profession, can accurately do this, care becomes simple, health becomes evident, and dysfunction becomes non-existent.

Want to find out if you are suffering from dysfunction? Complete a symptom survey and submit it to New-Start Heath Center for evaluation.
