What is the best diet to lose weight?

As you can see, this is a similar question as last weeks about losing weight. Let’s face it, I am in the health care field, the weight loss field, and the nutritional field, this is a common topic of my consultations.

Weight loss Columbus Indiana, weight loss Columbus, lose weight in Columbus, how to lose weight, nutritional advice in Columbus, Columbus Indiana nutrition, Columbus Indiana weight clinic, weight loss clinic in Columbus, wellness coach in Columbus, wellness, health clinic in Columbus, new-start, newstart, newstart health center, new-start Columbus, wellness in ColumbusI seem to find myself spending an abundant amount of time researching the latest and greatest FAD diet out that everyone seems to be so crazy over. I constantly hear about the amazing results of this new diet plan that will shed the weight in no time. Lose 10 dress sizes in three weeks. As I stated in the previous blog, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

To sum up the vast majority of miraculous diet systems out there, I would say you could put them in a few categories:
  1.        Calorie counters: These diets are based around the premise of counting every calorie you eat and try to stay at a certain low level to ensure you lose weight. It seems so obvious, a pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so if you eat 3500 less calories than you burn, you will lose 1 pound, right?
  2.        Appetite suppressors: These diets are all about decreasing your urge to eat. They use miracle supplements that just keep you from putting food in your mouth. This will decrease your calorie intake and ensure you lose weight. This is the same regard as trying to burn 3500 calories than you eat to lose weight.
  3.       Metabolism boosters: I am sure you have seen a plethora of supplements that claim to boost your metabolism. The idea is, if you boost your metabolism, your body will burn more calories at rest and you will lose weight. This diet seems so easy. I can eat whatever I want, and take this metabolism boosting supplement and let it do the work for me.
  4. .      Restrictive plans: These are designed to create a diet that restricts a particular food group. The low fat diets, zero carb diets, etc. The theory is that some food groups are responsible for your gaining of weight, and if you stop eating them, you will lose weight. I know you have heard of the anti-carb Atkins Diet. Everyone in the US has been brainwashed about how bad FAT is to eat. So, cut the bad out and you will lose weight, easy peezee.

Do you want to know the biggest problem with all of these diet systems????
They work.

Yes, the problem is they work. You do lose weight. The catch is, its temporary.

Sure, you shock your body by doing some radical change to your diet and you will lose some weight. There is a certain expense to this though. The Yo-Yo effect of dieting and weight.

Fun analogy time!!!

Think about losing weight as if you are trying to improve the gas mileage on your car.

A calorie counting or appetite suppressant diet will only decrease the amount of gas you put in the car. Sure, when your car runs out of gas and you are coasting along without the engine running, you will have a dramatic increase in your gas mileage. BUT> that car comes to a screeching halt and your car is sitting there without any fuel to run itself.  This is what happens when you restrict your calories to an extreme 1200 calorie a day or less diet. Yes, for a brief time, you will lose weight, but every functioning part of your body is being depleted of the fuel it needs to work properly. After time, you will shut down, and just like the car, you will start to fill that tank back up because your car, and your body demand fuel to function.  Now to get your body out of this extreme depleted state, your body is going to overfill its tank and you will add the weight back on, and typically plus some because the body is worried about a crash like that happening again.

Appetite suppressors are very similar to trying to water down the gas you put in your tank to get more out of it. Sure, you are going to use less gas, but your car is not going to run as well on this watered down replacement. End of the day, your car will get less miles per gallon per each gallon you put in because the fuel you are putting in it is just not what the car needs to run at its potential. Appetite suppressant supplementation basically make your body run at a less than optimal level because it doesn’t want to use up all of its stored fuel. And what happens when you run a car on watered down gas for long periods of time? Things start to fail and it eventually shuts down. You do not want this to happen to your body, because to get it started again, it is a lot like the caloric restriction diets, it will add weight back on to protect itself.

Metabolism booster supplements simulate the process of putting some super high octane booster additive into each of your fill ups at the pump to supercharge the energy that your car can burn. This is very effective; your car will run better, faster, and much more efficiently. The problem is this. Are you planning on putting this same additive in your car FOREVER??? Losing weight with a supplement that boosts your metabolism is great, but as soon as you stop taking this premium product, guess what happens? All of the weight you have lost, comes screaming back, plus some.

Restrictive plans are just ridiculous. The human body requires 3 forms of caloric intake to survive; protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Each of these macronutrients play their own vital role in the health and wellness of the body. If you cut one of these out, it would be like telling your car, sorry, your don’t need oil anymore. Sure the car will run a little while, but eventually, it will go bad, very bad.

So, back to answering the question. What is the best diet plan?

These questions that I am setting out to answer are some of the most complex things to answer in my world, but I will do my best.

How do you get better fuel mileage out of your car?

Every car will get better fuel economy out of premium gasoline. Sure we all of the expense of 87
Weight loss Columbus Indiana, weight loss Columbus, lose weight in Columbus, how to lose weight, nutritional advice in Columbus, Columbus Indiana nutrition, Columbus Indiana weight clinic, weight loss clinic in Columbus, wellness coach in Columbus, wellness, health clinic in Columbus, new-start, newstart, newstart health center, new-start Columbus, wellness in Columbusoctane gas at the pump, and when we make that discounted purchase, we know that we are hurting our fuel mileage. Unfortunately, the body is not much different. If you try to purchase low grade food due to a budget, you are going to struggle with weight loss because your body just will not run as optimally as it could. More importantly, you have to plan on putting the more expensive, premium gas in your car for its entire life. You can’t just put the good stuff in for a while, feel the amazing effects, and then expect those results to remain after you go back to the 87 octane junk.

So, to wrap up the longest analogy of all time.

If you want to lose weight, stop looking for a diet plan. Stop looking for something to help you lose weight in the next 3 weeks.  You have to start looking at what you need to do to get your body running as smoothly and efficiently as it can. You have to fuel it with the best of fuel, and you have to understand that every time you go to a fast food joint, you are just putting watered down poor octane gas in your body and it will have a very negative effect on your goals.
I will repeat this and hopefully make it clearer.

There is no special diet plan that is going to be released to make you miraculously lose weight. The body needs fuel, good fuel, to make it function at its best. You need to plan on providing this premium food for the rest of your life if you want to keep any weight that you lose off for good. Yo-Yo dieting is detrimental to your overall metabolic function and it is a major struggle with so many of us. Overcoming the idealism that there is something wrong with your genetics and ability is an important step to becoming your biggest benefactor for your health.

I wish I had some happy ending to put here with a miracle diet plan, but I don’t. If I did, I would be the wealthiest man in the world, but after all of the hours of research I have done, I can assure you, the only person that will help you lose weight is you. You have to take charge of your health and plan on making this a lifetime life goal.

Stop Looking for Greener Grass….

I am sure you have all heard of the term, the grass is always greener on the other side…

I am going to change your perspective of this simple overused concept.

I hope you understand that this is all an analogy. I am not actually talking about turf management.

trent mozingo, dr mozingo, new-start solution, health, wellness columbus indianaSo many of us look over the fence at our neighbor’s yard and just wonder how did they get such beautiful, plush, green grass. We wonder what their secret is. We want to experience their grass on our feet.
I think a lot of this falls on the misconception of luck. The one will less green grass always wonders how the one with green grass got so lucky. What did they do to deserve that grass that is so emerald green?
We wake up and peer out the back window to find our yard, and with a disappointed gaze, we look over and see our neighbor, riding a bigger lawnmower than we have, mowing their beautiful green grass. All we want to do is trade lives. Trade houses, get their house and yard, and all will be as happy as they are. We constantly compare our yard to theirs, and wonder how they got such green grass. We have the exact same amount of rainfall. We mow at the exact same times, but yet, it is always greener over there and not where I am standing.

Why is it so easy for our neighbor?

Gut check moment…

The truth is… You will never have your neighbor’s yard. You are put on this earth with a yard. One you are responsible for. Stop wondering why others bare a healthier yard than yours.

Only you are responsible for the color of your grass or the health of your yard. Only you can make it greener. Stop wondering why someone else has the grass you want. Stop trying to bridge over and enjoy their green grass as your own. Stop blaming reason after reason for your lack of the prettiest, healthiest green grass.

Grass isn’t greener on the other side. Your grass is greener if you actually put the required work in.
Here are three steps to getting that greenest grass.

 Plant the seeds.

When I say plant the seeds, I do not mean walk out and throw some grass seed down and hope for the best.
This process is about understanding the goal you have in mind. You have to visualize what you want your yard to grow into. More importantly, you have to get the soil ready to be sewn.  If you set a goal without doing any pre planning, and preparing, then the goal is destined to set on top of the ground like the seed you just threw out to grow. You have to till the soil, prepare for the vision you have, and you have to give your seed a chance to set roots. Without a proper foundation, your grass will never prosper.

Money doesn’t grow on trees. Nothing of value is free. You have to work hard for everything and you have to put groundwork in with only a vision of what could be. Fertilizer is an investment, an idea, or a task that you have to do that you know could bare zero immediate benefit, but you have faith in it.

 Fertilize your yard.
Dr mozingo, dr moz, trent mozingo, new-start, newstart, chiropractor columbus in, wellness, health, weight loss, goal setting, meeting goals
So many of us set a goal of green grass but then just put it on the back burner and wait for it to miraculously
come to be. This is a slow and drawn out process. If you really want greener grass you have to go above and beyond the bare minimum to have success.

Yes, the rainfall is the easiest way to give your grass the water it needs to sustain life. We are not after mediocrity. We don’t want grass that grows. We want the greenest grass.

You have to invest in your dream. Nothing of value is free. You have to work hard for everything and you have to put groundwork in with only a vision of what could be. Fertilizer is an investment, an idea, or a task that you have to do that you know could bare zero immediate benefit, but you have faith in it.

Your dream of the greenest grass will not happen overnight. You have to keep the future of what you want in your focus. You have to continue to feed the dream with all that you can, invest all you have, and you have to give it time to grow.

Weed Your Yard.

Every single one of us has experienced a nuisance trying to corrupt the integrity of our responsibilities. These weeds will plague your beautiful green grass forever unless you build the courage to go out and remove them from your existence. It is not easy work. Weeding a yard can be difficult on your body and mind.

Ironically, sometimes the weeds are even green, but you know, they have the wrong intentions when growing amongst your grass. They are not really there to see your grass become the greenest it can be, they are only after the nutrients that your goals allow them to steal. They will reap the benefits of your hard work and fertilizer. They will mask themselves as trying to help, but you have to see past it.

Understanding what you have growing that will make your yard greener and what will not is crucial. But being able to get rid of the negative impacts is even more important.

If you understand this concept, you should be able to apply it to many walks of life. Relationships, careers, dreams, hobbies, etc. All you have to do is understand that you are responsible for your own fate. You have to put in the groundwork. You have to see your dreams through to the end. You have to make sure you are doing everything you can to give any dream or goal the chance it deserves to prosper.

The Scary World of Weight Loss

The world of weight loss is scary.

I want to introduce you to the one of the most RIDICULOUS things I have ever read. It was brought to my attention that I need to look at the ABC Diet. As a warning, This diet is based on a pro-anorexia template.

functional medicine new start. Dr. Moz, Dr. Mozingo

Feel free to look it up at abc-diet.com.

This is a dangerous, ultra-low calorie diet that is designed for dramatic weight loss. Ironically, you can see at the bottom of the page, The Risk Factors.

Granted, this is a gross example of what under eating calories can do to the body, but realistically, it is all the same. If you diet in a form of just under eating calories by skipping meals, or eating two carrots, and a mini Snickers per day, these risk factors are relevant.

I have written a lot on the topic of weight loss, and tried to teach as many people as I can about the epidemic of obesity in our country. Some listen, receive the information, and make some drastic life changes to ensure they are healthier and enjoy their life to its fullest. Some, on the other hand, hear me, understand what I am saying, but are just not driven enough to take the necessary changes that it takes to lose weight. The vast majority or the patients I see, unfortunately, already know what is causing their weight issues, but try to look beyond it and dive headfirst into some whimsical fat loss miracle pill that will cure all of their weight problems and never have to change a thing with their diet or lifestyle.

The real issue is that there are so many within the weight loss industry that are just out to make a quick buck and sell as much of the newest gimmick product as they can before they close the doors and erase any traceable evidence that they even existed.

I constantly research and study biochemistry, and I fluently understand the many metabolic pathways that are involved in fat reduction, or losing healthy weight. The majority of people think that weight loss is all about CALORIES. I am sure you have read that if you eat 3500 less calories than you burn, you will lose 1 pound. This is completely untrue. Losing weight is so driven toward the scale, that the entire weight loss industry has lost sight of what is really important. How much you weight on a scale has no regard to your total health spectrum. Body fat percentage, muscle percentage, total water percentage, and your BMI are important. If you diet plan is not driven to lose FAT tissue ONLY, then you are not on the right diet.

Resting Metabolic Rate, or RMR, Basal Metabolic Rate, BMR, and Total Energy Expenditure, TEE, are the real caloric factors that you should be looking at. If you want to lose weight, you need to make sure you don’t decrease your RMR by losing muscle tissue or you will simply shut down your thyroid gland, and all of your metabolic function. The only way to increase your systemic RMR metabolism is to increase muscle mass. Eating 6 small meals a day does not increase metabolism. Not eating 3 hours before bed does not increase your metabolism. Skipping breakfast does not hurt your metabolism. What hurts your metabolism is under eating calories, not providing enough fuel for your muscles, causing muscular depletion, and shutting down your thyroid gland.

You never want to lose weight at the expense of your muscles. You do not want to do a colon flushing diuretic based diet that will just dehydrate you. You want to eat in a pattern that supplies your muscles with protein, nervous tissue with fats, and every cell in your body with carbohydrates.

This is where I could go on a thirty page discussion about how to fit your proteins, fats, carbs, to supply your body with the adequate amount of calories to fit your Total Energy Expenditure, but not exceeding it because you need to eat more than your RMR, but not more than your TEE if you want to lose weight. Blah, Blah, Blah.

dr moz, health columbus, columbus chiropractorSTOP thinking about food as calories. Stop wondering how many Snickers Candy Bars you can fit in and stay under 1400 calories/day. Start thinking about food as fuel. The body needs a lot of fuel, it needs a large volume of food, and it really doesn’t care about calories. The body needs proteins to be broken into amino acids. The body needs carbs to be broken into glucose. The body needs fats to build hormones. The body does not care about how many calories are associated. The body needs vitamins to make each cell function. The body needs minerals to ensure muscle contractions are strong and organized. The body needs sunlight to be converted into Vitamin D.

Let me be clear. The body has no concern, governing body, or control over how many calories you eat. The body can store excess calories taken in as fat, and the body can utilize that fat tissue in a later date if you under eat calories, but this has no regard to your health or weight loss on a long term scale.

Do you want to know why the body does not prefer to run on the stored calories that you have as fat?

Do you want to know why these health risks that the ABC diet discusses are associated with under eating calories to lose weight?

Do you want to know why focusing on calories in, calories out, and no regard to nutrients or vitamins is detrimental to your health?

I say this because the body does not store the majority of micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals that are involved in the body’s daily metabolic functions in fat cells. There are a few fat soluble vitamins that can be stored, A, D, E, K, but in all actuality, these all act within the body more as hormones than vitamins, so they are not as relevant when discussing micronutrient intake in your diet. The water soluble vitamins, B-Complex, are utilized in every cell, in every muscle and are NOT stored in fat tissue. SO when you go days without eating the proper amounts of fuel, or food, your body will be running on the stored calories from your fat, but it will be depleted of the vitamins that are not able to be stored within the body. This means that the body does not govern the use of these vitamins, it does not ration them. It uses them as it gets them. So, the more you feed it, the more you will use, and this means the more calories your body will be able to utilize.
So why do the ABC Diet risk factors happen?

As I stated in this blog, calories in/calories out is not the holy grail of weight loss. There is much more to the epidemic of obesity.

But I can assure you that the risk factor of Depression is linked to a deficiency in B-Vitamins.

Symptoms of Vitamin B Deficiency
  • fears
  • fatigue
  • depression
  • paranoia
  • confusion
  • hostility
  • rage
  • anxiety

Symptoms of Neuropsychiatric Disorders
  • morbid fears
  • severe fatigue
  • depression
  • paranoia
  • confusion
  • anger
  • suicidal tendencies

So, before you go on a crash diet, or start skipping meals to “lose weight” be sure you consult a physician that can help you get on a safe and healthy diet plan.

Eat Well. Feel Well. Be Well.

Leptin and Ghrelin,The Mysterious Hormones Related to Weight Management.

Leptin and Ghrelin, the mysterious hormones related to weight loss and weight gain

I am going to start this blog by saying this.

trent mozingo, dr moz, dr mozingo, chiropractor dr mozingoThe current struggles with weight loss and weight management has become a very serious topic. The health status in this country continues to plummet and every physician should be setting out to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Again, I said every physician or health advocate should be setting out to tackle this epidemic…
NOT,
every direct marketing connoisseur that is out to make a quick buck and get 7000 people under them so they can get a FREE BMW or whatever, by selling some miracle product with green coffee beans, Garcinia cambogias, acai berries, fat incinerators, metabolism boosters, etc.

If you are dead set that some weight loss pill is going to give you the results you want, you should stop reading now. To fully understand weight loss, you have to detach yourself from the thinking that you just need something to help boost your metabolism or just to eat less calories.

I apologize for that rant, but this is an important subject, and I get approached about three times a week with a new miracle pill and these sales persons just refuse to listen to the truths about scientific weight management.

Weight management is a very complex subject, and if you do not try to understand biochemistry on a hormonal level, you will never fully understand it.

Weight management is not just calories in, calories out.

This blog is not designed to give you all the answers you need to lose the weight you desire. This is not a concise weight loss plan. This is just a basis of information for you to take to your health care provider to discuss your goals and hopefully they will get you on a winning program.

This blog is here to help.

I am writing about two of the most currently researched hormones in regard to weight management, Leptin and Ghrelin. These two play a vital role in the maintenance of weight and appetite. There are many more hormones involved in the process of weight management, so to get the full story of what I am discussing, you should wait for further blogs, or the release of my first book, The 5:1 Weight Loss System.

The concept of leptin and ghrelin is very complex, confusing, and maybe not fully understood by any scientific practitioner. There have been countless amounts of research of these vital hormones, and many theories have been created. Sometimes, the concept can even confuse the person writing about these two hormones. I follow Dr. Mercola and a lot of his writing is spot on. But as you can read here in an article about sleep deprivation and overweight children you will see that his writing is conflicting of itself.

There are studies that show that ghrelin is the master hormone that regulates appetite, and in bariatric surgery, the majority of the weight lost can be linked to the removal of part of the stomach, inhibiting the body’s ability to produce ghrelin by association, decreasing the person’s appetite, and helping them achieve satiety with less volume. As you can see, in Dr. Mercola’s writing, he states that when children sleep more, they have benefits like lower levels of the hormone leptin. Then, the next paragraph states that if you are sleep deprived, you have decreased production of leptin??? This sounds very conflicting, right? Well it gets worse.

Other studies that analyze the serum levels of ghrelin showed that ghrelin levels are already decreased in populations with increased body fat tissue, and increased in leaner individuals, because ghrelin is responsible for helping the body eat less and decrease weight gain. So prior to the bariatric surgery, the overall levels of ghrelin are decreased in comparison to a leaner individual who isn’t a candidate for bariatric surgery. (Huh?)

Some studies show that weight loss can spike ghrelin levels in the body, trying to encourage weight gain while another study states that regaining weight after diet induced weight loss can be seen in patients with high leptin levels and low ghrelin. (Face palm)

I can go as deep as to discuss how ghrelin and leptin are related to insulin, and studies show that ghrelin inhibit the production of insulin, which is both bad and good, and insulin increases the secretion of leptin, which again, can be bad and good. Insulin promotes weight gain, but studies show that leptin promotes weight loss. (Pull my hair out)

I have put a list of cited articles at the end of this paper. You can read through them if you want, but trust me, the more you read about these two hormones, the more confused you are going to get. Heck, I am already confused about what I just wrote to give you a brief description of the research of these two complex hormones.

trent mozingo, dr moz, chiropractor in columbus So to be clear and concise, the general rule throughout the majority of research studies and physician beliefs of ghrelin is that it is the unwanted hormone because it drives hunger, and Leptin is desired to be elevated in the blood stream, and the only real problem with leptin is that you become resistant to its affects, similar to insulin.

There is a general concept that I want you to understand about this subject...

This article is my interpretation of many clinical studies of the two complex hormones of leptin and ghrelin. You can read any amount of research and satisfy your own craving for knowledge if you wish.

You can read Dr. Mercola, Hyman, or any other physician that has read the same research and tried to make some sense out of how Leptin is GOOD, and Ghrelin is BAD and how you don’t want to become “Leptin Resistant.”

I have read many different articles about this subject, and they ALL have one very specific thing in common..

THEY ARE ALL WRONG!?!?!?!
Rephrase, they have very accurate research, but the interpretations are all backwards.

Again, this is my interpretation. If you do not agree with my fundamental principles of these hormones, feel free to comment.

Chicken and egg scenario.
Ghrelin is not the enemy or the savior. Neither is leptin. These two hormones can neither be praised nor scorned, they are just trying to do their job and they each get in the way of one another.

To describe the properties of these two hormones, would take a six page article in itself, so to be short and clear, I just want you to understand the basics of these two.

Ghrelin is a hormone that is released from the stomach and is linked to the impulse of hunger. Leptin is released from fat cells and linked to the feeling of satiety or fullness. These two hormones are inhibitory of each other, meaning, when one is elevated in the body, the other is decreased. Meaning, if you have severe hunger your stomach has produced a lot of ghrelin, and this will inhibit your fat cells from releasing any leptin.
It is easy to relate to ghrelin being bad, because it promotes hunger, and it is easy to promote the praise of leptin because it shuts off hunger... SORRY, scratch that way of thinking.

The most relevant studies have been made about the two hormones, but just like any scientific experiment, you first need to have a hypothesis, then experiment to prove whether it was right or wrong. The vast majority of these studies had the principle hypothesis of how leptin is good and achieves satiety and how ghrelin is bad and makes us fat.

First, you have to look at the propaganda involved in the production of these studies. Who is going to benefit from the positive outcome of the findings. Bariatric surgical centers want you to believe that ghrelin is the devil, and if you get this surgery you will reduce the production of ghrelin and give you health. Hormone clinics want you to believe that leptin is good, but you just have a hormone imbalance that needs addressed to decrease your chances of developing leptin resistance.

I have no bias to why people gain wait, or why it is so difficult to lose it. I have no ties to any clinic other than New-Start Health Center, so I only benefit from knowing the truth, and getting positive results in regard to weight loss. I have no reason to jump on any bandwagon with physicians that write beautiful articles discussing what they have found by reading research. To me, regurgitating the information from a research study is doing nothing more than become a proponent of whoever wanted the study performed. Instead, I think outside the box, design my own opinion, with no ulterior motive, unless you consider getting unparalleled results inside of my clinic, motive.

Now I have procrastinated long enough from giving you the goods that I promised, so here goes.

Start by thinking this, ghrelin is supposed to be high, and leptin is supposed to be low in the body.

Do not concern yourself with leptin resistance, or elevated ghrelin will make you hungry and overeat. Instead understand that leptin is produced from fat cells. If you have excess fat cells, you will produce excess leptin, seem simple enough?

With each article that I have read, it is clear that when you lose weight, leptin levels drop dramatically, and ghrelin levels increase. The reason for this is that ghrelin is the master hormone regulator of your body weight, but more importantly your, LEAN BODY MASS. Your body does not want to experience any radical changes in your lean body mass because it sees this as stress on the body and will put you into starvation mode. When you are in starvation mode, your metabolism will slow down and further the problem.  Dieting often results in us under eating the adequate amount of calories, and when this happens, your starvation mode, or natural preservation, system in the body will maintain your fat cell stores of energy, and you will start to break down your muscles for energy. Unfortunately, when you see the scale moving in a downward direction, this is bad, because you are decreasing your muscle mass, decreasing your lean body mass, and decreasing your resting metabolic rate (RMR). The RMR is your body’s ability to burn calories at rest. The only way to affect this is to alter your lean body mass. As you can see, altering your RMR, or altering your lean body mass will alter your ghrelin.

So what does ghrelin want?

The average American gains weight very slowly and steadily. If you were to gain 1-4 pounds a year, the body will not register this as a major insult to the body, so what happens is ghrelin levels are reduced ever so slowly and fat content rises. With the rising fat cells, more leptin will be produced. So according to a clinical study, overweight people have a lower level of ghrelin, and a higher level of leptin in regard to leaner individuals will make sense.

Ghrelin is satisfied when your lean body mass does not change, so when you sit at a desk all day and do nothing to promote muscle mass increase, your lean body mass will stay the same. Your fat content will grow and grow, but you will have no change to your muscles or organ structures. Ghrelin levels must go down, because as I stated before, the two hormones are inhibitory of each other. If you put on fat mass, and produce more leptin, your body’s natural reaction is to decrease the release of ghrelin.

Leptin resistance is the new fad reasoning for this phenomenon of elevated levels of leptin and is compared to insulin resistance.

I have to agree, and as promised I am going to stay on track of talking about leptin and ghrelin without soapboxing about insulin, but I have to state this.

Leptin resistance and insulin resistance are very similar. Most clinical studies of insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes have a very specific bias and principle that is also BACKWARDS.

There is nothing wrong with your insulin, you just have too much of it that makes you resistant. You have too much of it because you have eating too much sugar. This is the same as leptin. There is nothing wrong with your leptin that causes resistance, you just have too much of it which solidifies my principle thinking..

Start by thinking this, ghrelin is supposed to be high, and leptin is supposed to be low in the body.

Lets get back to the point.

We are all interested in how I make sense of weight loss and these two complex hormones.
Well here goes, the only way to effectively lose weight and maintain the new weight, is to satisfy my principle thinking of these two hormones, elevate ghrelin, and decrease leptin.

Maybe you need more convincing of this principle.

It is impossible to lose weight with elevated insulin levels in the body, instead you need insulin levels low and elevated glucagon levels. Glucagon is the opposite of insulin, it removed energy from fat cells instead of storing it.

Well guess what hormone inhibits the release of insulin and promotes the release of glucagon?

Ghrelin, good ole ghrelin.

So back to the principles, you want elevated ghrelin because it will inhibit the release of insulin and promote the release of the fat burning hormone, glucagon.

Elevated insulin levels increase the release of leptin. Elevated insulin inhibits glucagon. Can you see what I mean?

IF you need this in more detail, I will explain it more clearly in my book, The 5:1 Weight Loss System.

Why weight loss is not easy?

You can not just eat less, exercise, and expect to lose weight properly. Again, this concept will reduce your lean body mass and make your ghrelin levels spike to cause the yo-yo dieting effect.

It is important to stop focusing on the scale to measure your weight loss. Instead, look into fat loss, or the conversion of fat tissue into muscle tissue. Typically, on a clean diet and exercise regimen, you shouldn’t even see a loss of weight for a few weeks. Adjusting your macronutrients will allow you to start to lose fat tissue, but you have to make sure you eat adequate proteins and fats to maintain your lean body mass.

Under eating causes a whole cascade of events, including a decrease in the function of thy thyroid. You will see your body temperature drop, and you metabolic function will suffer.

In conclusion:

The main concept that I want you to take from this writing is that the common fad about weight management and the issues inhibiting weight loss are typically in error. Leptin resistance is not as much of an issue as it is portrayed. You have to lose weight accurately, without crash dieting to maintain your lean body mass, and if you lose it, you will spike your ghrelin and start the cycle of yo-yo dieting. Under eating, over exercising, and starvation can all cause this negative release of the hormone ghrelin.

You need to have elevated ghrelin when losing weight to inhibit the release of insulin, and spike the release of glucagon. If your leptin remains high, and in obese people, it is, you will have elevated insulin, estrogen, and other weight storing hormones.

Do not worry about leptin resistance, because with effective weight loss, your leptin levels plummet and your metabolism will not fall into the trenches. You will maintain your energy levels, and as the weight comes off you will even see an improvement.

Stay Tuned for more on the rest of the hormones involved in this ever so complex concept, and remember, health is not a destination, it is a journey.
